Elena lives in the Compact. She doesn't have to work, she has a compiler that'll spit out whatever fetish gear she fancies, and she's happily independent. Everything's going great — except her love life. She's bounced from relationship to relationship, and none seem to stick. No one's fault, things simply don't work out, and so she spends many a night alone, at home, wrapped up in latex and watching the lewdest streamer she can find.
Until she meets Ophrys Boquila, Third Bloom, at a game night hosted by a mutual friend. The fashionable affini, perhaps unusually, seems happy to merely date Elena, but Elena wonders if that can work. Affini are Affini, after all, and the urge to domesticate seem to be so deeply ingrained as to be unshakeable. What does it mean to let yourself fall in love with an affini like you would anyone else — and what will become of Elena if she does?
I always try to avoid speaking in superlatives when it comes to HDG, because there are so many incredibly talented authors and artists in the space, but when the question of "Greatest of all time" comes up, I don't think there are many less controversial picks than Kanagen. She's been writing HDG for over four years; No Gods No Masters is rightfully considered one of the foundational texts of the entire setting; Floret in the Mirror was foundational for what the digital compact could be; she spearheaded the concept of "nothocultures"; she wrote one of the two definitional "affinification" stories; and through it all, she has yet to produce a single work that falls below the level of "absolutely incredible".
Lacuna? Lacuna is absolutely fucking incredible. A masterclass in slow-burn frog-boiling, with a killer hook and immaculate execution, this might genuinely be my favorite story in Kanagen's world-class roster. It's that good.
Mild spoilers ahead.
If I may, allow me to go right ahead and spoil the "hook" of Lacuna, by quoting from chapter 3.
"I mean to approach tonight, and whatever comes after, in precisely that spirit. In fact, I will make a further commitment. I will only ever initiate domestication proceedings with you at your request."
And hoo boy is this one hell of a hook. It reminds me of a few of my favorite courtship stories; Dancing to Her Rhythms and Good Sensory immediately come to mind, and I'm just about as feral about Ophrys and Elena's dynamic as I am of those stories. I mean, being a floret is a huge commitment, and some people aren't really into that... But maybe you still want to have a meaningful relationship with an affini in spite of that. What could possibly go wrong?
There's this incredible frog-boiling feeling throughout, as Ophrys gently nudges Elena towards doing more things that make both of them happy. The passage of time is very tangible, in a way few HDG stories offer. Instead of taking place over the course of days or weeks, this is a story that happens over months and years, and we get to watch every subtle shift in the dynamic as it happens, experiencing it in a way not dissimilar from the main character. Even as the elements of play gradually become more esoteric and extreme, it never feels like much has changed... until, all of a sudden, you get a shock to your system, you look back, and see how little you recognize of the person you used to be. Every step on the path you took to get there was small and made perfect sense at the time, but after so many steps, you are far, far from home. It is a masterful slow burn, and the way the arc resolves itself... chef's kiss. Beautiful. Genuinely - this is the craft of storytelling on a level we don't get every day.
And then there's the kink. Oh god the kink. Ophrys is an artist, and sees the world through that lens, and the experiences she crafts are just obscenely hot. Latex fans are going to be eating especially good in this story, but honestly, if you like anything about high protocol BDSM, dollplay, or affini more generally, this story is likely to hit home in a big way. (Also: while it's not tagged as dollkink, dollkink enjoyers should still definitely give it a look.) There is a recurring class-M scene in this book that left me speechless.
Lacuna is an absolute gem of a story. If you like courtship, if you like slow burn, if you enjoy the idea of being in a dynamic with someone you can become addicted to, if you think latex is hot, if you trust my opinion as a curator and reviewer... do not miss this one.

Sometimes you don't even have to be looking for a pet. Sometimes they find you.
Addy is an independent reading books in a library. She's woken from a light nap by a traveling Affini with a shared interest in books. She barely even has time to feel something shift within herself.
Independence is easy until it isn't.
This is a sweet, fluffy little oneshot about a meet-cute at a library. It made me cry happy tears, so it's getting a curated-hdg entry. It's just... the way it portrays that sudden crush, that feeling of need one can have, the certainty of it all...
It also plays delightfully into one of my favorite headcanons about HDG. To wit: no matter how well-adjusted of an independent you are, there is at least one affini somewhere within the compact who will just immediately crit you, who will be perfect for your desires and your needs, and in front of whom the concept of independence will simply crumble. Your soulmate. The one.
And it's exactly that sort of crumbling in a rapid moment that this story portrays flawlessly. Sometimes there's just that moment where you know you've found the one. It's a feeling many of the BPD folks in my audience are likely familiar with, and many have likely been burned by in the past... but in the affini compact, that feeling can be real, and all it can take to have the one for the rest of your life is to just... reach out and grab it.
I think that's beautiful. And so is this one-shot.

A feralist wakes up in a cubeship, flying through space on the way to his new owner. By the time he reaches the other side, she will be a precious little floret with an inseparable bond to her future pinnate, and a leaky little quickshot faucet between her legs. This is the story of her forceful transformation, bound inside the cube with a VR visor and a bundle of vines.
Hey, you - are you normal about VR? About the potential to use VR headsets to create extremely immersive, potent experiences? About the kinds of hypnosis you can work with when you have complete control over a screen held directly up to someone's eyes?
If so, prepare to no longer be normal about it. Sly does not miss.
Precious Cargo is a relentlessly horny story about a feralist being packed up and transformed into a sweet little girl while en route to her new owner and pinnate. She might object to those pronouns at first, but rest assured, she won't for long. It is an incredibly perverse, mind-melting fantasy; helplessly trapped and transformed into exactly what your owner desires from light-years away, until you're ready to be opened up as a present for someone else as a very different sophont than who you started as.
This one belongs in a tier with Symbiosynthesis, Mainspring, Perfect Match, Anastatias, and the like in the canon of one-shots that will absolutely crit you, give you a new fetish, and leave you with a horrifying yearning in your chest. Or, as Kanagen put it in the comments:
Ending up in a wardship is the last thing proud independent, and alpha male terran, Mikey o'Malley wanted. Lucky for him he has his perfectly normal human woman wife, Susan, to help him navigate his new reality
What's this? New Ravens words! This is a spin off series of Sheepwave and Slylittleprincess' My Pet Spouse, featuring one of the side characters. As such we recommend reading My Pet Spouse in order to get some context for what happens in this story [honestly you should read it anyway, Sheep and Sly fucken cooked and its one of our fav updating stories in the setting at the moment].
This is gonna be a very silly, and twisted romp as a truly awful individual gets the happy ending they deserve.
This is not going to be ace friendly, we're going full freak with this, you have been warned

Ancot Mielthorn is a slightly prudish second bloom with the softest vines, and an even softer spot for her little sprout students she teaches in a summer program.
Cynthia Chrysanthemin is a crass fourth bloom hedonist that's pretty damn sure she's got everything she could want in life.
The only thing they have in common is that they’re both dating the same affini, Malle, who is Ancot’s sisterbloom, and that Robin, Cynthia’s floret, is one of Ancot’s students.
But perhaps opposites will attract, and the more they interact, the more they’ll learn to like each other.
If you need more of a recommendation to read Exogamy than the byline... Hi! Welcome to HDG. You must be new here. Lagnia and Sheepwave are two of the most prolific, most talented authors currently contributing to the HDG canon, and their last collaboration, I Can't Motivate Myself To Hate You, was excellent.
It's still very much setting things up, but good lord, even the setup of these characters is... woof. Ancot is a prudish affini who runs a school for little sprouts and seems to want nothing to do with sex, be it of the xenosophont or affini variety. Cynthia previously appeared in the disturbingly hot "A Taste of Class Omega", radiates sex, and makes bespoke commissioned pleasure grafts as a hobby. Malle is a submissive little slut who is dating both of them. And Robin... Robin is hot for teacher.
Look, I don't know what these two are setting up quite yet. The tags may provide hints, but we're still early on in this story. The only thing I know is that it threatens to be apocalyptically hot. You can already see from Ancot's internal monologues that there's some suppression that's going to get detonated, and when that goes... hoo boy. I'm very excited for how this one turns out. But even if all we get are the two published chapters, the descriptions of affini-on-affini affection in chapter one alone would warrant a recommendation from my end. Everbloom.

You're an independent at the Summer Beeple Party. Attractions abound, and you're curious and interested in all the party has to offer. Ooh, is that a beeple kissing booth? You've never kissed a beeple before…
One of the truly beautiful things about HDG is the spirit of collaboration that flows through it. And what better way to celebrate that than with a 4-person audio featuring a bunch of extremely fuckin' weird beeple and some serious xenodruggies?
(Pro tip: don't kiss a beeple unless you're ready to pack your bags for a trip.)
Each contributor brings their own sauce to the party. Mofu, played by Yuki_the_Kitsune_Bi (AKA Mofu) is light and fluffy and carefree. Macaroon, played by Lagnia, is an utterly bizarre, inscrutable ball of chaos who doesn't mean to ruin sex for you but might anyways. Evvie, played by Cadence, is a dominant pet who's extremely eager to make you feel good, whether you want her to or not. And Monteschia, played by Delcan, is a calming presence in the eye of the storm, a chill sophont who's seen it all and wants to help ensure you have a good time cooling off.
Each of them wrote and recorded their own part of the script, collaborating to make this drug-fueled hypno experience extremely fun. Give it a listen! Kiss a beeple! You might just like it. The taste of her honey chapstick...
Also, look at this ridiculously cool art that Mofu made for it!
This document reviews a series of events occurring on January 5, 2555 between a floret and her Affini, who is a clerk at the Office of Neoxenoveterinary Archeobureaucracy and a skilled bureaucrat. Attached is the series of forms that make up the bulk of the events. Review by floret follows.
This is a story told entirely in the form of bureaucratic filings between a floret and her owner.
It is gut-bustingly hilarious, surprisingly wholesome and meaningful, and shows off just how successfully you can use the very mechanics of bureaucracy as a tool of play. In short, it's a Harmony story, and a very accessible one at that. Give it a read!
