Dance Theatre of Harlem Mixes Ballet with Contemporary Dance
Choreographer Robert Garland will never forget the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s premiere of his piece “New Bach.”
“People asked, ‘Are you going to cancel the performances?’ ” Garland recalled recently. “But Arthur Mitchell (founder of the Dance Theatre of Harlem) said, ‘The arts exist to uplift the spirit,’ so instead of canceling, we dedicated the entire season to those who lost loved ones in 9/11.”
