After a miscarriage, Rita falls into deep grief and withdraws from life. Dexter struggles to comfort her, unable to fully understand her pain. Rita joins a grief group and meets Arthur, who gains her trust by validating her anger. He manipulates her into believing some people deserve punishment and coerces her into helping kill a woman he claims ended her pregnancy.
Dexter grows suspicious of Ritaās behavior and links her to the crime through a necklace. He tracks her down, discovers Arthurās influence, and kills him after learning he manipulated Rita.
Later, Dexter reveals the truth: the victim had actually suffered a miscarriage, just like Rita. Devastated, Rita realizes she was used. Though both are emotionally broken, Dexter and Rita stay together, finding a fragile connection in their shared trauma.
