Neurotypical Proverb: Everyone gets depressed sometimes. Everyone has been miserable at times. It’s normal.
Translation: In my limited life experience I have never experienced distressing emotions of the intensity and duration of which you are speaking. I think I have experienced emotions as intensely as anyone could. I don’t know any better. Because I have never experienced them and because you look okay to me, I assume you are exaggerating and they must not be as distressing as you say. Media has created in me the expectation that intense emotions will be expressed dramatically. I am incapable of understanding how someone who feels as you do can stand there and speak quietly about it. I don’t understand how exhausting dealing with a mental illness is and how damaging the stigma attached to mental illness is. I am ignorant about what mental illness is, but I am giving you my opinion and advice anyway. I don’t even realize I am being rude and hurtful. I don’t know enough to realize depression is not the same as being sad or heartbroken. I don’t realize saying “Everyone gets a depressed sometimes” is about as intelligent saying “Everyone feels like they have twelve-fingers backwards on their left hand sometimes.”
