McCoy accidentally grazed Spock’s chin with his elbow when he brought his fist up to pound on the door. “James Tiberius Kirk!”

Spock handed the doctor a meticulously wrapped gift. It almost looked like he must have calculated exactly how much wrapping were needed and how to get all sides symmetrical.
“Spock- For me? Shucks, you didn’t have to go through all this trouble, but thank you. Nice wrapping job, too. I’ll save the paper.” He slid a finger in between a fold and pulled it apart. “Any hints? Or are you going to let me be surprised?”

Spock hadn't left his side, he had actually barely moved at all. Instead he had watched over his unconscious friend, worrying that he would never wake up. Thankfully, that was not the case. As soon as he noticed that the man was waking up, he stood up from the chair he'd been sitting on and leaned slightly over the bed. "Jim...?"
“Ow,” Jim mumbled, aching and sore everywhere. He opened his eyes and quickly shut them again, the light too much. Carefully, he opened them again, just slightly, and that worked better. “Spock?” he asked, trying to force a louder voice from his dry throat with little success. “Wh’ happ’n’d?”
