Try Canada. Even in our most densely populated areas, cities are between 1.5-2 hours apart by car. Beyond that, we talking about hours and hours and hours. My family used to drive 10 hours (each way) twice a year to visit my grandparents. They only lived one province over!

This is the first update from the readalong that I've seen, but it's definitely interesting that Igraine doesn't take the regency. I really like the idea that she might have been not sold on centralization. I think, in the general historical period of a supposed Arthur, that after the Romans left, post-Roman Britain definitely would have taken the reins of self rule, and Romanized Britain probably split into city states. My history is fuzzy, forgive the supposition.
So, I don’t think one should ever have to beg pardon for a supposition! But we do know the basic outlines of what happened after the departure of the Roman legions, and it wasn’t city-states. Tony Grafton, in a textbook, described the Roman Empire as “going into reverse gear,” and I think that’s a very helpful way of thinking about it. Rome was, moreover, never as culturally influential in Britain as it was in more proximate provinces. Though we get “Britain” from “Britannia,” also, there were many leaders and regions; by the mid-sixth century, there are seven kingdoms. Arthur is spoken of in a number of early sources as responding to the Saxon invasions of the 5th and 6th centuries, as well as, notably in the Welsh Triads, as a military leader to whom all others are compared.
