Nether Largie in Kilmartin Glen, Scotland, has one of the most plentiful concentrations of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains in the mainland of Scotland. Above pictured is Nether Largie South and Nether Largie Mid cairns. Both were built around 4,000-3,500 years ago and are associated with ritual practices and were used as burials. A rare axehead was found in Nether Largie Mid.

Cairnholy I & II
It's estimated that the two chambered tombs here are between  4-6000 years old, truth be told not a lot is known about these cairns, or others for that, I looked around online and found that a jade axe had been found here during excavations in 1949 and that it originated in the Alps! These cairns are very well signposted at a junction on the A75 about six miles west of Gatehouse of Fleet, we met an interesting man at the first site who told us he was "of the hill" when asked where he was from, he had his own views about the cairn and went on to tell us about it all being about Concave and Convex curves and had been studying them for years.
The first image shows the foundations of a rectangular Neolithic house which was excavated at Russselstown, Co. Carlow by archaeologist Linda Hegarty and her crew. It's c. 5,500 years old (photo Noel Dunne). The second photo shows a reconstruction of one of these Neolithic houses at the Irish National Heritage Park in Wexford.Â
