Woodson's mill, Lowesville, Va. This mill was built in the 1790's and is still grinding grain using water power and large granite stones. One of the operators is from a family that has been milling grain since the 1880's (albeit at another mill not too far away). ~Nelson County, Virginia hosts the beautiful George Washington National Forest in which you will find America's tallest waterfall East of the mighty Mississippi River. Named after William Crabtree, who settled the region circa-1777, Crabtree Falls stands an impressive 1,000ft (300m) high and boasts five cascading waterfalls with the highest drop being 400ft (120m). This photo is the last of the five cascades (Spanish for waterfall), and is located at the beginning of the trailhead. In the 1960's the land was acquired via private and governmental funds and saved from development into a resort by L.A. Snead, former U.S. Assistant Fuel Administrator during World War I. Due to the high tourism in the area the U.S. Forestry Service maintains a steep 1.3 mile trail named The Crabtree Falls Trail and the area is a park within the Forest named Crabtree National Park.
