I think about this line a lot, it's from Twighlight of the Idols. The concept of testing idols, or ideas. Nothing is true or sacred unless it is. Our culture seems way too willing to be sold cheap and disposable products both material and ideological.
I think about the novel Brave New World and the hypnotic and subconscious conditioning that people are put into, they are afraid of being other than the rest of society or of their class..., they pursue consumption and material happiness at the point of worship. But it's empty.
Also, we recently discussed Great Gatsby in our book group. The narrator Nick performed this testing of idols throughout the novel, revealing the true nature of Daisy, Gatsby, Tom and Jordan. We even get the true nature of Nick as he leaves the vapid East and returns to his home town in the West to his known truths.
