Clay, plates, glass water, glass bowl

For Imprints of Hunger, I created negative impressions directly on a glass table, using common utensils like forks and spoons, as well as my fingers to serve as a physical metaphor for hunger. The bowl of soup and glass of water are positioned in the center, creating a focal point to deepen my piece narrative on need and longing. I wanted to create clay impressions as a ghostly reminder of meals that were never consumed and hands reaching for food that will never be provided. In order to make the impressions, I placed forks and spoons into the clay to create parallel lines that represent repeated, empty attempts to obtain food. Then I use my fingers on the slab of the clay and place them on a plate to add human traces, capturing a desperate, almost primal gesture of reaching for livelihood. I wanted these marks to introduce a personal element, suggesting the way hunger impacts both body and mind.
