31M / 29F long distance relationship falling apart after 1.5 years despite love, but constant cycles of silence, anger, and miscommunication
We’ve been together for 1.5+ years in a long distance relationship and have met only once. There is love, care, and emotional attachment on both sides, but we keep getting stuck in the same cycle and I don’t understand how to break it anymore. I’m 31M dealing with an extremely stressful phase of life right now. My father’s health is unstable, my family business is under pressure, and my daily life is chaotic. Because of this, I often struggle to consistently make time for long video calls or planned “dates”, even though I try to stay in touch through daily texts and calls whenever possible. She is 29F, living abroad, also under her own stress with work uncertainty and emotional exhaustion. She often tells me she feels unseen, emotionally alone, and like she has to bottle things up in the relationship. What keeps happening is a repeating loop: When she feels overwhelmed, she asks for space or goes quiet. I usually respect that space, but I stay available and try to reconnect later. After some time, instead of things calming down, it escalates into anger or emotional outbursts, often about feeling neglected or not prioritized. I try to ask what’s wrong and understand it, but she says she needs time to think or space again. Eventually it becomes emotional rupture points where things are said like “I’m not happy” or “I feel like I don’t want this anymore.” Then after some time, things cool down and we reconnect again with warmth and affection, like nothing is permanently broken. But the cycle repeats again and again. Recently it escalated more than usual, with her saying hurtful things in anger, and me feeling like I’m constantly walking on eggshells while still trying to hold the relationship together. I genuinely don’t know if this is a communication issue, a compatibility issue, or just two overwhelmed people handling stress poorly in a long distance setup. Has anyone experienced this kind of repeating cycle where love exists but conflict keeps escalating into temporary break threats and emotional shutdowns? How do you actually break this pattern without losing the relationship or each other in the process?
I mean, really. What are you even getting out of a long-distance relationship marked by periods of no contact and constant fighting and stress? Like. What is the point? What do you want a relationship for, and how does this relationship meet any of those needs? Seriously, I'm sorry, but realistically, there's no way you're getting anything but the ability to honestly tell people "I'm technically not single". A relationship should add to your life and bring joy. This one doesn't. What are you doing to foster human connection and relationships (including platonic) offline?
