Panakam( Brown sugar water) and Neer mor (diluted yoghurt)!
*******************************************************************
Rama Navami Celebration denotes the birth of Lord Sri Rama . On that day Panakam and Neermor are offered as Prasadham to the God. Panakam is nothing but Jaggery or brown sugar water and the Neer mor is diluted yoghurt. Today, I offered these as Prasadham and I want to share this very simple recipe with you.
These are really hydrating drinks for the summer .
Panakam: (Brown sugar/jaggery water)
1/4 cup of Brown sugar or Jaggery (Indian brown sugar)
1 1/2 to 2 cups of cold water
2 pods of cardamom (remove skin and crush the seeds)
1/2 to 1 tsp of ginger powder.
1 to 2 tsps. of lemon juice
Dissolve the brown sugar in water using a whisk. If it is Indian Jaggery, filter with a cheese cloth to remove dirt and residue.
Add the ginger powder, crushed cardamom and the lemon juice and mix well. Panakam is ready.
Neer Mor: (diluted yoghurt)
1/2 cup of yoghurt
2 cups of water
1/2 tsp. of salt
a small ginger piece (de-skinned and crushed)
a few curry leaves (tear them)
For tempering:
1 tsp of cooking oil
1/2 tsp. of mustard seeds
a pinch of asafoetida.
1 green chilli (totally optional...de-seed them before adding)
Using a whisk , blend the yoghurt well without solids. Add the crushed ginger, salt, water, curry leaves and whisk well to blend.
In a small pan, under medium flame, add the cooking oil. When the oil is hot add the mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds pop, add a pinch of asafoetida and transfer to the Neer mor and mix again. You can add the de-seeded green chilli, just for flavour after the blending and mixing is done, so that you will have the flavour , but not the spiciness.
You can make it any day and enjoy!
