In trying to think of a guess, I got hung up on a question. Of the aliens we have met some, like Milo and Vi, have components to their skin that create textures. Of the species we have seen, do any have particularly dense skin? It got me thinking about the gauge of needle that would be needed and I imagine that could easily create a negative relationship with the needle or substitute tool.
Skin type has nothing to do with it.
