Uniima speak using their crest. Each opening adding a sound to the conversation. Sometimes 2 openings are used to repeat tones of the other person as they reply to them. But the crest isn't quite like the usual system, it can't well mimic other sophont speach. This means Neal can't speak like a Uniima nor a sloman if he were to use his airways.

The sound doesn't come out of him at all. It's created close to him, but that too doesn't need to be the case. He has a sense that many others have (maybe like under 1% of the population with regional higher and lower density), which makes him aware of the much smaller physical happenings around him. Doesn't mean he knows what an atom is, but he can tell there are things, and they are moving, and the air is the things.

And so he moves them himself.
