Los Angeles: Activists arrested in solidarity with immigrants
Eight people were arrested April 17 in front of the Los Angeles “Hall of Justice,” where the county sheriff’s office is located, protesting Sheriff Jim McDonnell’s anti-immigrant policies. Those arrested were part of a rally organized by the Caravan Against Fear, which held actions to highlight the attack against the immigrant communities by President Donald Trump and to support SB 54, legislation calling for a “sanctuary state” in California. That legislation prohibits state and local enforcement agencies from enforcing immigration laws and limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
The International Action Center in Los Angeles endorsed the caravan and participated in the civil disobedience. Maggie Vascassenno and John Parker of the IAC, who are also members of Workers World Party, were arrested, along with six members of NDLON and SEIU-USWW, for blocking the street in front of the sheriff’s office.
Said Vascassenno: “Trump is trying to destroy our solidarity. So his racist, fascist war agenda must be opposed. And on May 1 there will be millions out in the streets telling both Democrats and Republicans alike that we will fight Trump and any policies that push cutbacks, war and racism.”
Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez, a 48-year-old father of four U.S.-born children, remains in detention.
Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez, an undocumented father of four U.S.-born children, has lived in this country for more than 20 years. On Tuesday, he was dropping his daughters off at school, as he does every morning. He and his wife had already dropped off their 12-year-old daughter and were headed to drop off her 13-year-old sister next when Avelica-Gonzalez was detained by immigration officials a block from his daughter's school in Highland Park.
"If we allow this as a community to continue, then we create an environment where children are afraid to go to school, parents are afraid to drop their children off at school, and people are living in a culture of fear," Emi MacLean, an attorney with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) told LAist.

"We shot this Jornaleros del Norte music video outside of a prison on the night President Obama announced his new deportation policy. While the new policy grants relief to some, it criminalizes others. Our job is to keep lifting our voices together until their is equality and justice for all immigrants. Please watch and share."
