June 20 #NCAHM2018 In early 19th Century, thousands of Haitians and Jamaicans traveled to Cuba, especially in the provinces of central/eastern Cuba - Ciego de Ávila, Granma, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba y Guantánamo, to supplement labor in the cane fields and other jobs. Many remained. They brought their culture and heritage and assimilated in broader Cuba culture. #NCAHM2018 With surnames like Sagba, Malval, Handal, Henriques, DeLeon, Nunes, Hanna, Mahfood, Issa, Joseph, Ammar, Azan, DeSouza, Shoucair, Succar, Feanny, Dabdoub, Matalon & Ziadie, the Caribbean region welcomed thousands of Middle Eastern immigrants from Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Spain and Portugal to Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico and other nations.
