Eastern Iowa Native Prairie
To visit an Eastern Iowa Native Prairie that was not invaded during the recent periods of glaciation is to take a unique walk back in time and history. The insects visiting the prairie plants are unaware that the ancient ancestral bloodlines of the sun drenched Liatris, Solidago and Grama Grass are deserving of a reverence usually reserved for royalty or other high ranking officials. These prairie plants have survived through the millennia facing wind, rain, fire, bison and ultimately man, perhaps the greatest challenge of all. Still, the prairie plants toil in their rich, untainted soil with a primal earnestness full of knowing from the labor of countless lifetimes, passing on through their offspring the answers to the riddles that we can only ponder.

A storm cloud rises ominously above the Codfish Hollow Hill Prairie
Iowa is an agricultural state, which means much of the landscape has been altered by man to achieve his agricultural ambitions. These ambitions are by necessity economically drivenā¦few people can afford to farm for the sheer joy of farming, it is a business and too often every square inch of land is used for that purpose. This week I had the privilege to visit a remnant of the original Iowa prairie that once covered much of the state and has generously been safeguarded from the plow. Ray and Patti Hamilton opened their private preserve in Jackson County to prairie enthusiasts from across the state.
Ā The Hamiltons have managed this roughly 60-acre rare biological preserve for 34 years with care and dedication that is evident in the language they used on their evening field trip when describing the uncommon plants which they encourage. Hairy puccoon, blue-eyed grass, downy painted-cup, shooting stars and cream wild indigo were just a few of the treasures that awaited discovery on this May evening when towering thunderclouds hung overhead just a few miles to the south.
Ā While an Eastern Towhee sang its familiar song on a distant hillside and a Nighthawk soared playfully overhead, it was interesting to see, perhaps quite accurately, how this land and the associated flora would have appeared several thousand years ago. In my mindās eye I envisioned the surrounding hills and valleys restored to the conditions as they would have looked as well, a sight sadly never to be seen again.

This Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) appears to have claimed a portion of a restored prairie as its nesting territory. Prairie grasslands once covered about 80% of the Iowa landscape, with around 0.1% remaining. Keeping this in mind, every small addition becomes meaningful.
Prescribed Burn
Prairies and native grasses love fire, and none like it better than our very own Minnesota Mosquito Refuge.
Soā¦.
These guys showed up last week to do a prescribed burn.
With all kinds of cool toys.
They rode along Two Drunk Creek to get on the leeward (downwind) side of the refuge.
Before starting the burn.
It didnāt take long to get the flames going.
But mostly what they got was smoke.

Here in the self is all that man can know Of Beauty, all the wonder all the power, All the unearthly colour, all the glow, Here in the self which withers like a flower; Here in the self which fades as hours pass, And droops and dies and rots and is forgotten Sooner by ages that the mirroring glass In which it sees its glory still unrotten.~John Masefield

Soon the bracken became shorter, and before long it was left behind as a clearing opened where the dry pine needles covered the floor of the forest with a soft brown carpet. Rays of light pierced the canopy of the forest, were reflected in the ground mists and appeared as glorious shafts interlaced with the tall stems of the trees; bright and dark threads woven into a design.~Richard St. Barbe Baker.
To those who have seen it and smelt it, To those who have loved it alone To those who have known it and felt itā The Prairie is ever their own; And far though they wander, unwary, Far, far from the breath of the plain, A thought of the wind on the Prairie Will set their blood rushing again.
