How Della kept getting dragged into helping at the local synagogue she had no idea. Maybe it was her guilty conscience over missing so many Shabbat services. Maybe it was her way of doing penance for the fact that she had married and divorced someone not of her faith. Someone who hadn’t even been from this island. Or maybe it was because her mother kept going on about how she should help out more in their local community. It wasn’t like it was a big community. Less than 5,000 people called the island home and only a couple hundred were Jewish.
Today she somehow got roped into sorting out the donation box. At least this was better than helping with the afterschool program. Dealing with a dozen teenagers was enough to drive anyone nuts. Glancing up from her place on the floor when she heard the door open, she smiled at the person. “If you’re here to see Rabbi Goldstein he’s in his office. If you’re here to pick up one of the kids I think they’re in the rec room.”
