Driving to Paradise from Longmire, after 8 ½ miles, you see a sign and parking area for Narada Falls. Once the snow melts off the trail, probably in June, you can take a short hike down to view the waterfall. But regardless of time of year, you can always view the Paradise River above the waterfall. Have you stopped here and taken pictures of the Paradise River? If you’ve visited here in different seasons, you might have noticed a difference in the river. In April, May and June, the river might be roaring as it goes under the stone bridge you take to the trailhead. In September and October, it becomes quiet with much smaller amounts of water flowing under the bridge. The rivers of Mount Rainier are almost entirely fed by melted water from glaciers and snow. Whether you’re drinking water at Sunrise or flushing a toilet at Paradise, its melted snow or glacier.
Its pretty amazing that Mount Rainier gets enough snow during the winter so that we can drink water throughout the summer and autumn. And its not just people, critters and plants in the park that rely on the snow for water. Five rivers start inside the park; the Nisqually, Cowlitz, White, Carbon and Puyallup Rivers. A lot of fish, critters, people and farms down stream rely on these glaciers, snow, and rivers. Have you taken a picture of the Paradise River at Narada Falls? Just imagine all the things that needed the water in your photo. ~ams
