Joiner farmhouse, ca. 1760s. Near Suffolk, Virginia. HABS photo, Library of Congress (HABS VA,62-SUF.V,1--3)
Survey notes: “The interior was inaccessible, but it appeared that the front door led into a large room at the west end of the house, while the stair occurred at the southeast corner of the east room. The trim was simple, of the period, though much deteriorated. The house is near the Blackwater River, extensively utilised at one time for water-borne commerce.”
Building is now likely demolished.
Joiner farmhouse, ca. 1760s. Near Suffolk, Virginia. HABS photo, Library of Congress (HABS VA,62-SUF.V,1--2)
Survey notes: "In spite of its dilapidation, the Joiner farmhouse is an important example of the southeastern Tidewater dwelling of the Colonial period. It is of frame, the walls being covered with beaded weatherboards and the roof with rounded butt shingles. It is a story and a half in height, with inside end chimneys. The front (south) is three bays, with the entrance doorway considerably off-center to the left. The door itself is of the normal sixpanel type with beaded rails and stiles and beveled panels. The trim is modern."
Building is now likely demolished.

#Repost @redcrookedsky (@get_repost) ・・・ After 20 years of legal effort, the #Monacan, #Chickahominy, #EasternChickahominy, #Nansemond and #UpperMattaponi have received federal recognition through the signing of the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act of 2017 into law. We celebrate with our family and friends who are part of this victory yet we remember that the sovereignty of our first nations is not—and never has been—in the government's control. We stand with our relatives who remain "unrecognized." We recognize you and we are on this road together for life.
So today The President signed a bill to federally recognize the 6 tribes of Virginia. So happy right now to hear via email that it’s now official. #littlebeardesigncompany #virgina #nativeamerican #recognition #tribes #virginiatribes #chicahominy #chickahominyeasterndivision #rapahannock #nansemond #uppermattaponi #monacannation
