I feel like Deadendia took a lot of the things SVTFOE failed at and did them better.
Particularly the ending where all magic is destroyed and the worlds combine. For one, no one needs magic to survive in this world, so they're not killing anyone, but they're also rewriting the timeline, so society isn't suddenly being uprooted. It's also clearly shown that the current cosmic order is inherently oppressive to demons, the planes system was designed to oppress them, and the existence of magic is linked to that. Also, with the exception of Earth and Mewni, all dimensions were permanently separated in SVTFOE, the ending didn't create unity, it caused even more division, Earth and Mewni were accidents. Deadendia gave us an ending where everyone got to be together.
Secondly, the love triangle between Norma, Badyah, and Zagan was more satisfying. Marco never really got the chance to consider Star's crush before she got with Tom, so it just felt like bad timing, unearned drama. That's not the case with Badyah, she actually turned down Norma, and could've changed her mind at any point in book 2. That made her jealousy in book 3 more interesting to watch, because it's not just bad luck, it's the consequences of a decision she regrets. She also took action on her crush, declaring her feelings once she was sure she did want to be with Norma. Zagan was also more self aware than Tom, she could see the writing on the wall, and amicably broke up with Norma after seeing them kiss.
The ending also specifically confronts the one who created and rules this system, not just some individual prejudiced person. This story even points out how that's counterproductive.
