Thoughts Post East Coast Mifgash.
When I returned from East Coast Mifgash last week I did not think I would end up writing this post (even though I had a lot to say) because I deemed it irrelevant to the purpose of this blog. However, in light of the recently published question regarding Na'aleh's relationship to the six other machanot in North America I have reconsidered. East Coast MIfgash is three day leadership program for post Bogrim, MBI, and Madatz aged campers (kids currently in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades) who attend one of the Habonim Camps on the east coast of the United States. Campers of only the three eldest ages groups from Mosheva (MD), Galil (PA), and Na'aleh (NY) gathered on the site of Camp Galil during the weekend of April 5th. I was one of the eighty odd campers that attended.
Does your camp do any work on Israel-Palestine issues?
Na’aleh is part of a Jewish Zionist Youth Movement (Habonim Dror) so our ideology does support the idea of Israel being a state. That being said the easiest way to answer this question is to say that we are very pro-education on this issue. Na’aleh aims to educate its campers first and foremost through peulot (daily exercises.) Though not all are on issues like this, many are. It is important to our camp that we create an informed and passionate group of campers. We aim to do this through education.

Does your camp do any interfaith work?
Na'aleh does not do any specific work with Interfaith. However, that being said we do welcome people into our community without reservations. Even though we are a camp based on Jewish values, and teachings that strives to create a culturally Jewish atmosphere we have had, and encourage kids of other religions to join our family. -Micaela (Madatz '13)In my experience at Na'aleh, there is actually a lot of open discussion about interfaith and multicultural issues. A lot of our peulot (daily educational activities) are about the ethical complexities that surround these issues. Last summer, my kvutsa (age group) had a discussion about laws in France that prohibit Muslim women from wearing burkas. While one perspective argued that the law protects gender equality, many felt that their religious freedom was violated. The best part, is that at Na'aleh the same kind of conversation on real-world ethical issues is adapted and run for younger chanichim (campers) too. I remember having peulot about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at at least once every summer since I came to Na'aleh. Part of what makes Na'aleh different from most Jewish camps is the effort made to put out young individuals who are aware and educated about the world around us.-Dena, Bogrim '12
