Round 2 — Match 9 / 9 — He Who Was' Raven vs. Myshka

"Still alive? How disappointing."

Raven is the albino companion of He Who Was. They are found together in the Ruined Battlefield.

If not using Speak with Animals, it is possible to perform a Nature check to examine the raven. If successful, the narrator warily notes the raven is malevolent, and touching it would not be wise. If trying to pet the raven anyway, he caws and nips at their fingers. Although the raven considers the player character competent enough to suggest  He Who Was entrust them with an important task, he otherwise holds contempt for them. If spoken to using Speak with Animals, the raven immediately says "Everyone hates you." Any responses are met with more malicious statements. For example, if spoken to by a Druid or Ranger with the choice of: "I am a friend to all, little raven. There is no need to be cruel", he replies with, "You think the creatures of the realm owe you something just because you never shut up. They whisper about you, you know. Call you stupid and ignorant. They wish you were dead! Hah!"

"honestly he is one of the best bits of He Who Was characterisation in the whole scene. The raven is the one nudging the conversation forward, the one deciding you might be useful, and the one making the whole partnership feel less like “man with pet” and more like “creepy little two-person committee.” He makes He Who Was more interesting by existing next to him."

Myshka is a medium haired white Cat with blue eyes in the Lower City of Baldur's Gate.

Myshka can be found in an alley east of Bonecloak's Apothecary. The party can speak with Myshka using Speak with Animals. He speaks in a feline dialect called Mriaer, which comes across as a corrupted version of Common when communicating using Speak with Animals. While Myshka thinks a character is his mother (or that they know his mother), Myshka will follow them for a period of time while they remain in the area, and can be asked to follow again in subsequent conversations. Along with Barsik and Malta, Myshka is one of three different cats located near Bonecloak's Apothecary that can be asked to keep Derryth Bonecloak company if Baelen Bonecloak died in Act One, and the party has spoken to her about how she feels lonely without him.

"myshka is exactly the kind of animal that makes people cast speak with animals on everything forever after. without it he’s just a pretty white cat in an alley. with it he becomes this weird, scruffy, needy little personality that half the playerbase instantly imprints on. that’s the spell doing its job perfectly."

"he is maybe the fastest route in the whole game from “oh, a cat” to “I would die for him.” The second he starts asking if you’re his mother, half the playerbase loses all critical thought."

"i’m voting myshka partly because the community reaction to him is so intense. people do not just like this cat, they imprint on him immediately and start getting mad they can’t take him back to camp. that kind of hold over the audience counts for something!!"

"this is one alley conversation. one! and yet people remember him more vividly than a ton of larger NPCs. that is efficient character design. fluffy white cat + weird speech + “are you my mum” = instant permanent brain damage"
