...Of all the days to forget your umbrella, why did it have to be today?
The wind whistled through the campus like a mournful hymn, carrying with it sheets of relentless rain. Droplets drummed against your uniform as you hurried through the downpour, head ducked in a futile attempt to shield yourself from the weather.
You'd heard earlier that the rainy season would soon arrive in this part of Twisted Wonderland. You just hadn't expected it to come this suddenly—
..or this mercilessly.
Every other storm you'd experienced here had been fierce but brief, little more than a passing shower that left behind damp sidewalks and fresh air.
This?
This was a deluge.
By now, your uniform clung uncomfortably to your skin, your shoes squelched with every hurried step, and your hair was plastered to your face.
....Great.
Now all you could do was hope you didn't catch a cold before making it to your destination.
Unfortunately, life seemed to have other plans.Your foot caught against the curb just enough to throw off your balance.
Before you could recover, the slick pavement stole your footing completely. You pitched forward, landing unceremoniously against the rain-soaked concrete with a wet thud.
You muttered something under your breath, wincing as you pushed yourself onto your hands.
A chorus of footsteps splashed past, accompanied by muffled conversations beneath umbrellas. You could already feel a few curious glances drifting your way.
Fantastic, as if this day wasn't embarrassing enough.
Then came another sound.
Clack, clack, clack.
Light, hurried footsteps rushed toward you.A moment later, the rain abruptly stopped pelting your back.
Blinking, you looked up, to then be a witness to an umbrella hovered overhead.
For one awful second, you braced yourself. Great... was someone seriously about to laugh at you? Make some snide remark while you were already sprawled across the sidewalk in front of half the student body?
“ Geez, what kind of loser forgets to bring an umbrella to school? ”
The voice made your shoulders tense.Only for it to be immediately followed by—“ Owww! ” A soft thump echoed through the rain.
You lifted your head fully to find Grim rubbing the top of his head with a pout, little wisps of blue flame flickering indignantly around his ears.
Standing beside him was Yuu, crouched beneath a broad umbrella that sheltered the both of you from the relentless rain. One claw still rested where it'd lightly bonked Grim moments ago.
"I'm so sorry about him,"
Yuu said with an apologetic smile.
Despite the perpetual curve of their shrimp-like mouth, there was genuine concern in their glossy eyes. Their antennae gave a small, worried twitch as they looked you over, checking for injuries.
Grim huffed dramatically, still nursing the bump on his head.
“ I was just sayin'— ”
“ And you could've said it later, ”
Yuu replied gently.
The dire-beast grumbled something under his breath before shuffling beneath the umbrella anyway, his tiny flames settling down as he took shelter beside the shrimp humanoid.
Yuu's attention returned to you.
“ Are you alright? ”
They extended one claw toward you, while the other remained firmly wrapped around the umbrella's handle to keep the rain off your shoulders.
“ You didn't hit your head too hard, did you? ”
