The active tension capability of a muscle decreases as the muscle lengthens. Likewise, the muscle loses its ability to shorten as it deviates from its optimal length.
Optimal length is defined as l0, lmax, or Rest length. At an optimal length there is the most overlap between myofilaments of the sarcomere, and thus the greatest ability to generate force.
