and even after she tells patrick what she did to her husband, he still indulges her and tells her where the diamonds were the whole time. anyone else would've loved to have kept it secret just because they could, because why would someone who killed her own husband matter in the grand scheme of things? but patrick doesn't feel that way. while he does show care toward jennifer, i think he genuinely does empathize with people who've done wrong -- he certainly did, didn't he? how can he judge when he feels he's done worse? when he's done awful things, himself?

the only time he truly seems to judge or scorn others is when they commit genuinely heinous crimes -- otherwise, he's going to be kind and gentle. he could be anything else, he has been anything else ... but in these situations, he empathizes deeply.
