that this is a lonely evening

and even a frog is company.

We sit and talk of useless things

(I’ll admit you mostly listen,

which is fine)

and I tell you all the things I must

and you blink very slowly.

At last, tired out, I put you back in the yard.

In two hops you are back in the pool.

I grumble and fish you out

and toss you over the fence. That night

I can hardly sleep for the singing of frogs.
