I wake up and log online to a community I'm in that labels itself as a safe space. I head to the general chat, and I see that a staff member has posted an ai-generated image of a Jewish woman, adorned in Semitic accessories, and a Nazi soldier in SS uniform. The two are posed in a tense, forbidden romantic encounter, reminiscent of a tragic ya novel. "I just found this. Isn't this so fucked up?" He asks. Two other staff agree, shaming the ai "artist." They talk about how the person who originally posted the image has posted others of a similar nature, and they all agree that it's disgusting. I'm still looking at the image. I would not have seen it if it wasn't sent. I know that my fiancé, who is openly Jewish, has likely seen it already. These people know our heritage. I feel anger bubble inside me, and try to swallow it.
Nobody asks why he thought that was appropriate to send in the first place, nor does anyone admonish him for doing so. I delete the image, and respond to his message calmly telling him this was not appropriate. He agrees, and says he won't do it again. Another user, having missed the spectacle, tags him to ask what it was. They ask again. "What was it, though?"
