i know i’ve said this before, but franmaya is the ship that got me into ace attorney properly. when id only just started playing jfa i was looking at fan content — mostly nrmts, and a lot of franmaya was coming up too. at first i was confused because they don’t share much screen time in justice for all at ALL. but once i finished farewell my turnabout, i completely understood.
first of all, before this i was only in a fandom with pretty much solely mlm ships, and i was absolutely DESPERATE for some wlw content. so i gave them a lot of attention. but way, WAY more than that is their narrative parallels. i am such a sucker for characters overcoming negative teachings and self-hatred to learn how to feel and enjoy positive emotions, and franziska absolutely fits that, which contrasts her so well with maya who is relentlessly upbeat. my very first fic with them was exploring the aftermath of the engarde case, because it’s a very emotionally complicated time for franziska as she learns to deal with emotion and guilt and loss for the first time, properly. and i think she would blame herself for maya’s kidnapping and for the fact that if she’d properly won the case like she wanted maya would have died. maya is extremely entangled in franziska’s journey to emotional realizations and maturity.
beyond that bittersweetly poetic moment, though, they share SO MUCH in common. both of them have to deal with these crushing legacies, and though they choose to do it in different ways i think that they can help each other be vulnerable about it because they start from the same place. also that isn’t just one way, either; around franziska maya can be open and honest about what she’s dealing with, and serious. neither of them have to put on a front. they can trust each other.
there are SO MANY more similarities i could go on about lol but i’ll cap myself off there hehe. thank you for giving me the opportunity to wax poetic though <3
