After the succes of the Cubedrop, the psa try new format, of smaller and lighter lander. The main goal is to get a lander under 1t with it's booster included. Of course this will limit the number of scientific instrument the lander can carry.

The PSA engineer have come with the idea of the piledrop:

The PSA also tried a new strategy to lunch cheaply it's probes in the Kerbin system, by mainly using solidfuel booster to do the heavy lifting in orbits.

The fight went perfectly, and the lander landed in a creater near the north pole of mun

The PSA wanted to test some lander systems the first mechine tested was the RainDrop. It's got its name from the shape of the lander.

Sadly the on field test was not concluant for deep space exploration. Upon landing the lander displayed very strange reading and some of it's scientific instrument ware not responding. After some pseculation, the reason was found, lander pieces were fond scattered around it's landing location. Picture from Aralgan probe showing a small crater near the lander.
