A Tamaraw for prompt 13 of the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge The Tamaraw is a miniature buffalo found only on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. In what I guess is an example of island dwarfism, the tamaraw stands at just 100 to 105cm at its shoulder and is 2.2m long with an additional 60cm for its tail. Both sexes have distinctive V shaped horns, more reminiscent of a goat than a cow. A solitary creature, tamaraws prefer tropical highland forests where they feed on grasses in glades. Tameraws are listed as critically endangered, with numbers estimated at less than 300 adults although it is hard to be sure because they shy away from human contact. An orange bellied parrot for prompt 11 of the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge This little ground parrot is barely bigger than a budgie and is one of the few migratory parrot species, breeding on Tasmania and overwintering on mainland Australia. It is critically endangered with only 70 individuals confirmed as living in the wild in Jan 2022. This painting is mixed media, with a watercolour base. When the paint dried, the colour shift removed all contrast, so I went back in oner the top with colour pencil. A Bavarian Pine Vole for prompt 5 in the @WildlifeWednesdayChallenge I couldn't find much in the way of information on this critically endangered vole, which was thought extinct, with no sightings after 1962 and significant habitat change in the area where it lived in the 1980s. However the trapping of a single specimen in 2000 proved the vole is still with us, but its numbers and range are unknown. This is a mixed media piece, sketched out in pen and coloured with Caran D'ache Neocolor 2 water soluble crayons. More playing with water droplets, this time on a pink background. This is mostly watercolour, with a small amount of colour pencil over the top to add definition to the edges of each drop, plus white gel pen for the highlight. This is still very much an experiment. I started with the watercolour but didn't think it was crisp enough, hence adding the pencil. I started out with a black and white Polychromos, but the black was too harsh, so switched to my trusty WHSmiths colour pencils which while a lot harder, I have a range of colours so was able to give a more subtle effect for the shadows. I kept to the white Polychromos pencil throughout for blending because it's softer and more opaque.
