“ryuji...”
you’re not sure what to say to that, and instead busy yourself with your ramen while you think it over. ( it could stand to be spicier; but this is the hottest bowl on the menu and you don’t want to be rude when ryuji likes this place so much. )
you’d seen it the moment you arrived at shujin academy. students avoided him, teachers gave him the bare minimum of respect because their job required them to. kamoshida killed any chances ryuji had at clawing his way back up from the pit he threw the guy into by provoking him... he was always fighting, and even if anyone wanted to help, so long as kamoshida was around...
you grip your chopsticks a little more firmly, not liking the thought of what might have happened had you and hitomi never transferred to school.
“it... gave you endurance, if nothing else,” you respond after a moment. it doesn’t feel like enough, but... it’s something. “i’m sure there are days you definitely wanted to give up on... well, everything, really... but... you kept fighting. the odds were stacked against you, but... even when it seemed hopeless... you never stopped trying. you never stopped caring about others.”
a pause. this is sounding like a speech from some shonen anime, and you flush lightly. “it just took a breath of fresh air and you got your chance, is all. hitomi... she’s great for that sort of thing.”
you don’t mention yourself, not wanting to be narcissistic, instead going back to your noodles. why are you so bad at encouragement?!
