Forest Whitaker Joins 'Empire' for Multi-Episode Arc

The Oscar winner will play a prolific producer who gave Lucious (Terrence Howard) his first big break.

Another Oscar winner is coming to Empire.

Forest Whitaker has signed on for a multi-episode arc on season four of the Fox hip-hop drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Whitaker will play Uncle Eddie, a charismatic music icon and bona fide hitmaker who gave an unknown Lucious  (Terrence Howard) his first radio airplay way back when. Decades later, Eddie steps up for Lucious at a critical moment during his rehabilitation, and a grateful Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) invites him to produce a song in celebration of Empire Entertainment’s 20th anniversary.

The season-four premiere of Empire, set for Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, sees Lucious make his first public appearance after the explosion in Las Vegas, while all members of the Lyon family have their own interests in Lucious regaining his physical and mental faculties. (Additionally, Empire’s season-four premiere is one part of a two-show crossover with time slot companion Star.)

Whitaker joins Demi Moore, who made her debut in the season-three finale of the 20th Century Fox Television drama as a nurse aiding Lucious in his recovery after the explosion, setting up a major season-four role.

Since its phenomenal launch in January 2015, Empire has continued to lure top talent for guest-starring roles, including Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, Chris Rock, Mariah Carey, Eva Longoria, Taye Diggs, Alicia Keys, Rosie O’Donnell and Ludacris, among others.

The role reunites Whitaker with Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, with whom he worked on the feature The Butler. Following his Oscar-winning role in The Last King of Scotland, the actor’s recent film roles include Arrival and Rogue One. His TV work includes the recent Roots remake, The Shield, ER and the short-lived Criminal Minds spinoff Suspect Behavior. Whitaker is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Ziffren Brittenham.

Thanks!  Yeah, there’s a part of me that likes the idea that they balanced the Kasem reference with a Delilah reference.  The way Cas mentioned Blondie and the Ramones in 10x09 when he was talking about CBGB.

Off the top of my head, hmm.  The killswitch that Cole installed in Sam’s car was likely radio controlled.  Dean saying that everything had gone radio silent when they were ready to get back into the game, in 10x06.  And they made a point of showing us the Impala’s stereo controls.  (It entertains me that it says Rampage.  Which is apparently a model of stereo that actually exists.  They’ve shown it before, in 2x16 and 5x22.) 

There’s angel radio … though that hasn’t come up in a while since most (all?) of the angels have gone home, except for Cas and the playground angels.  Still kind of associated with Cas, though.

There’s the old radio in Dean’s room, which is still there as of 10x12 and has been there since at least season 9.  I think this is it in 8x16, when Dean tried to get in touch with Cas but didn’t get a response.  (In which case the low light level in that part of the shot would make sense.  I used this screenshot from 9x04 to compare them.)  (crossroadscastiel​ recently talked about it as a vanitas symbol.)

It’s interesting that that radio is there.  Radios are for listening to, but they can also be communication tools.  (Maybe getting a little bit far afield here, but cell phones and wifi both use part of the radio spectrum, and those were big parts of 10x13.)  

Given that communication (often miscommunication and failed communication) is such a big part the Carver era, it makes me wonder—does the radio work?  Has Dean ever listened to it?  As thevioletcaptain noted here, we’ve seen him use an iPod to shut himself off.  But in the last few episodes we’ve seen a lot of Dean not communicating with Cas directly, only through Sam, as basically everyone has noticed.  :)
