Medieval Floor Tiles
The tiles around the altar are a rare survival of 12th-century AD medieval floor tiles, originally laid at the Lady Chapel of the Abbey in Muchelney, Somerset.
These decorative tiles, now at Saints Peter & Paul's Church in Muchelney, Somerset, were buried for nearly 300 years, which explains their present fragile and weathered condition.
Their preservation is remarkable, since medieval tiles were often broken up or reused during periods of rebuilding, the Reformation, or later renovations.
What makes these tiles especially valuable is their iconography.
If examined closely, you can see designs including knights on horseback and elephants carrying howdahs (seating platforms), motifs that reflect both medieval chivalric culture and the fascination with exotic creatures.
Elephants, for instance, were virtually unknown in medieval England except through travellers’ accounts, manuscripts, and bestiaries.
Their appearance on tiles symbolised power, otherworldly marvels, and the reach of Christendom’s imagination.
Tiles like these were typically made using the encaustic process, pressing designs into the clay and filling them with contrasting coloured slips before firing.
This created durable, patterned surfaces suitable for sacred spaces.
Their placement in the Lady Chapel highlights their original role in adorning one of the most important devotional areas of the Abbey, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
