Appie woke up from his coma!!! So great news! Can u please tell us more about it?
Heeey! Sorry for the late reply. Iāve been thinking how to answer this, because I indeed saw the international press making way different headlines than the Dutch did. And also respectable media.
Nouriās brother never actually said he has woken up from his coma⦠I think they also got confused by what a coma is and maybe think itās like a movie you open your eyes and everything is peachy again. Many headlines in Holland are that Nouri is improving neurologically. Or in the intro of the article saying: āNeurologically Nouri is improving, thatās what his brother saysā. No one here is saying heās out of a coma.
Nouriās brother said that communication between him and the family is possible: āIn the beginning that wasnāt the case. Then he was really in a coma, but since December/January his consciousness is a bit better en since that time thereās a form of communication with him. If you ask him stuff āopen your mouthā or āconfirm by moving your eyebrowsā he does that. So there is some kind of communicationā And thatās the only time he mentioned coma. Iām not a medic but I feel like the international media is being overly optimistic with the story while Dutch media is just focusing on the neurological aspect of it.
The same thing kinda happens with Schumacher. When you first read he woke up from his coma you also think ššššš½ but headlines like that can be very misleading, because 4 years after and we still donāt know much moreā¦
What his brother also said is that he gets the feeling Appie recognizes them. That he reacts different to them compared to the medical staff. The doctors saw that too because in the beginning they werenāt allowed to be with Appie that long, but after the medical staff saw he became calmer around his family and not with them theyāre allowed 24/7. Since then thereās someone of the family with Appie day and night. Since July 2017 there has always been someone of the family with him.
At times he also sits in a wheelchair, but that goes with ups and downs. His brother: āIn the beginning that went ok, then it was hard and then ok. It goes with ups and downs. His immune system is very weak. I donāt want to go into details but he has had it very tough. But thatās normal for someone who has had brain damage; Then youāre seeing things that arenāt normal.ā
They also talk that they joke around and that they see him react. But then his father adds āI miss his smileā he says as he points to a photo of his son with Ajax player and great friend Van der Beek on the wallā¦
And they speak about the lovely memories they had about the day football fans joined them at the house to honor Nouri. No matter what club you supported (rivals of Ajax or not) people came from all over Holland that day.
They end with the fact that the bound with Ajax is still ok.
Edit: ok itās a bit longer than I expected š
