I received amazing news this past week! I got accepted to the program of my dreams. After all the years of hard work and sacrifice, I can finally say I’m on the path to become a Doctor of Psychology! I am so excited that my voice will be heard on a broader platform and I will be able to challenge the stigma that mental illness carries! I stand here as a powerful mujer who’s mission is to push for continued inclusivity of POC within the mental health community. I’m soooo ready! Oh! & I also treated myself to a new watch because I fucking deserve it! 😁 #IWantItIGotIt #LevelingUp #DoctorateBound #DrVillacorta #MSMU #POCLeader https://www.instagram.com/p/BwFf1YxAA5E/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ljhofjzfv9yo
Mount Alumna Mentors Young Scholars on Civil Justice
By the Office of Fellowships | Thursday, September 28, 2017
The Mount is a place that fosters engagement, encourages conversation, and develops ideas from administration, faculty and students who share a mutual commitment to promoting justice within our local communities. Fittingly, Mount St. Mary’s University’s Office of Competitive Fellowships had the honor of hosting Mount alumna Siobhan Madison, C’97, for dinner at the Carriage House Inn this past Thursday. Mount St. Mary’s University President, Dr. Timothy E. Trainor, the Office of Competitive Fellowships Advisory Board including Dr. Jamie Gianoutsos, Dr. Garth Patterson and Dr. Thane Naberhaus, along with several fellowship students attended the event.
Ms. Madison has worked as an attorney for 17 years for the State of Maryland, most recently as an Assistant Attorney General overseeing areas of public health policy. Since then, Ms. Madison has accepted a position as a Limited Scope Project Attorney with a non-profit organization called Civil Justice Inc. Civil Justice Inc. seeks to provide legal services for low- to middle-income individuals while increasing access to justice through “traditional and non-traditional means.”
Prior to the event, attendees were asked to carefully review two articles. The first titled “Making Justice Equal,” discusses the justice gap and the ways in which shortfalls in civil legal aid perpetuate poverty. The second article titled “To Shrink Jails, Let’s Reform Bail,” is an op-ed written by Kamala Harris and Rand Paul. The article examines our bail system and the ways in which reform, such as the Pretrial Integrity and Safety Act, can yield better outcomes for our justice systems.
Ms. Madison engrossed the attendees with conversation about limited scope representation and the ways in which it helps to alleviate the justice gap. She shared personal experiences, which enhanced the conversation and shed light on the outcomes of justice gaps globally, particularly related to the access of legal services. Students commented on the opportunity to discuss pertinent topics with a Mount alumna, expressing both intrigue and gratitude when followed up with after the event.
This year, the Office of Competitive Fellowships will host a series of dinner events where administration, faculty and students will continue to engage in informative discussions. Ms. Madison was very pleased with the outcome of the event, and wishes to return for events throughout the year.
