It was only a few minutes later that Viviâs family arrived. Â âVivi!â Â Serena gave her a hug before pulling back to look her over. Â âAre you okay?â
Vivi nodded. Â âThe doctors gave me a clean bill of health.â
âI will be the judge of that,â said Obaa-san as she walked over. Â She gestured for Vivi the kneel, which she did. Â Obaa-san frowned and muttered an incantation under her breath. Â âSomethingâs wrong.â
âWhat?â  No one had noticed anything oddâŚWait.  They had no way of seeing if something was wrong.  âI am missing about a weekâs worth of memories.â
Hiro knelt down.  âOkaasan is right.  Thereâs some sort ofâŚfilm over your eyes.  Itâs barely noticeable.â
âI can still see just fine so itâs not affecting my vision,â said Vivi. Â âAny idea what it might be?â
âHard to say, but it definitely shouldnât be there,â said Hiro. Â âThe problem is weâd likely need to see it active to know what it does exactly, and it might do something harmful.â
That was a catch 22. Â Vivi wanted to know what it would do, but she didnât want to risk damaging her eyes or something.
And that reminded her of Sydney again. Â She started crying again, leaning into her mother. Â âI had a fight with Sydney.â
âFriends fight sometimes,â said Serena in an attempt to console Vivi.
Vivi shook her head.  âNot like this.  There was yelling.  She said I wasnât taking our investigations seriously.  That I wasnât paying attention to how often we ended up in trouble.  That I wasnât letting her and Arthur do other things they might enjoy.  That we needed breaks!â  Vivi sniffled.  âI thinkâŚI knew she had a point, but I didnât want to admit she was right because that would mean I was being selfish and careless.  So I said it wasnât that bad, that we would be fine, and that she could choose the next place we went to.  She wasnât happy.  We ended up yelling at each other.â  Vivi took a breath.  âShe was right!â
And as Vivi broke down crying she wondered if her friends would ever want to talk to her again.
Vivi was still crying when Lance arrived with a few other people she didnât recognize. Â Lance initially ignored the Yukinos, instead checking in at the front desk. Â The people who had followed him in came over to the Yukinos. Â âVivi, are you okay?â asked the man.
Vivi blinked.  âUh, yesâŚâ  Why did he care?
âDid you guys get attacked by a ghost?â asked one of the girls.
Vivi frowned. Â Her head was starting to hurt. Â âI donât know. Â I canât-â Â Her head was pounding. Â âIâm sorry. Â Do I know you?â
The whole ER seemed to fall silent. Â Vivi looked around at the shocked faces and felt like sheâd said the wrong thing somehow.
Suddenly everyone started talking over each other.  Vivi wasnât sure why, but it felt like her head hurt more and more as the volume increased.  She couldnât breathe!  SheâŚsheâŚ
Blood.
Vivi passed out.
Once Vivi was placed on a bench with Serena watching after her and the Pepper kids, the rest of the adults met in Sydneyâs room to discuss things.
âHow is Sydney doing?â asked Mrs. Pepper.
Sydney Sr. put a hand on Juniorâs forehead.  âThe doctorâs say she should be okay.  She probably wonât wake up for another day or two.â  Sydney Sr. sighed.  âI guess she wonât be going to any archery competitions for a whileâŚâ
âShe should still keep some arrows on her,â said Granny Yukino.
âNo now, Mother,â said Hiro. Â âThe most pressing issue right now is Lewisâ location.â
âHe wouldnât have just abandoned them,â said Mr. Pepper.  âAnd they wouldnât abandon him.  SoâŚso what happened?â
âVivi doesnât remember him,â Lance said suddenly.
âWhat? Â But theyâve known each other for a decade,â said Mr. Pepper.
âI think itâs a curse,â said Hiro.  âThereâs aâŚfilm of some sort over Viviâs eyes.  Itâs barely noticeable, but when you arrived and started asking about Lewis, it suddenly became much worse until she passed out.  I think itâs keeping her from remembering him.â
âWait. So it was a ghost or somethinâ like that?â asked Sydney Sr. Â âI thought Sydney protected them from that sort of thing.â
âSheâs too tired,â said Granny Yukino. Â âShe exhausted her powers enough that protection wasnât possible.â
âHer aura does seem a lot weaker than usual,â agreed Hiro. Â âIt would still take something powerful to do that sort of damage though. Â Itâs not something most investigators ever encounter.â
âWould this entity still have Lewis?â asked Mrs. Pepper.
Hiro crossed his arms in thought. Â âItâs possible, but Vivi canât remember where the events took place. Â I will probably need to wait for Sydney or Arthur to wake up and tell me.â
âActually, I talked with the nurses before, and it sounded like Sydney didnât know what happened either,â said Sydney Sr.
âYeah, the doc said Arthurâs probably gonna have some memory loss,â added Lance.  ââŚAnd maybe other brain damage.â
Everyone winced at that, but no one knew what to say to console Lance.
âMaybe I can look at Viviâs travel plans and figure out where they went,â said Hiro, giving Mystery a significant look.  Mystery gave a subtle nod.  Theyâd be working on the problem later on.  âAndâŚif youâd rather Vivi stay away for now, I understand and would prefer if you tell me now so I can pass it on to her.â
âDamn straight I want her to stay away from Junior!â said Sydney Sr. Â He gestured towards Sydney Jr. Â âLook what she did! Â I know Sydneyâs got a habit of getting in trouble, but she doesnât go lookinâ for it!â
Lance nodded. Â âYeah, yer familyâs done a lot to help us, but Viviâs not coming near Arthur until she understands why Iâm angry with her.â
âThat shouldnât take too long,â commented Granny Yukino.
Mr. Pepper sighed.  âI personally donât mind, but considering what happened when we saw Vivi beforeâŚâ
âYou probably have to avoid Vivi for her own health, yes,â admitted Hiro. Â âBut rest assured we will be working on figuring out what happened to her and how to reverse it.â
âAaaandâŚhow long is that gonna take?â drawled Sydney Sr.
Hiro sighed. Â âI have no idea. Â It depends on how strong the curse is, what is necessary to remove it safely, possibly the position of the celestial bodies.â
âAs it is not actively harming her we are going to be as careful and thorough as possible,â added Granny Yukino.
Hiro nodded. Â âItâs very inconvenient for all of us, but if circumstances were a bit different it wouldnât be an issue.â
âWeâll keep the children away from Vivi for now,â said Mrs. Pepper. Â âThey wonât like it, but after how she reacted before I'm sure they'll understand."

Lance had been having a pretty normal day before he got a phone call at 1:13PM.
âHello, may I speak to Lance Kingsman?â asked the man on the other side.
âSpeaking.â
âThis is Child Protection Services.â Â He was a bachelor with no kids. Â âAre you related to an Arthur Kingsman?â
Lance paused. âNo idea.â Â It had been a while since heâd spoken to the rest of his family. âI got a cousin living in the states.â
âPercival Kingsman?â
Lance nodded. Â âYeah.â
âWe determined Percival Kingsman is the name of Arthurâs father, but when we suggested reuniting Arthur with the rest of his family, he had a panic attack. Â We checked the records and found your name listed as a relative. Â Do you have any idea if Percival might be abusing Arthur?â
Lance shrugged. âCanât say. Â I havenât seen Percy in 20 years, but he did have a bit of a temper. I lost touch with him after he joined that cult.â
âYes, the Return to God MovementâŚâ  The agent seemed rather unsure.  Not that Lance could blame her.  He found the whole concept confusing.
âSo, whatâs gonna happen to Arthur?â asked Lance.
âWell, heâs being evaluated. Â If heâs mentally stable, he will be placed in foster care.â
Lance briefly wondered why the kidâs sanity was in question before deciding it was unimportant. Then he made another important decision. âNah, I can look after him.â
âThatâsâŚallowed,â admitted the officer.  âBut you just found out about Arthur.  Are you even prepared to look after a child?â
âNo idea, but I intend to give it a try,â said Lance. Â Maybe it seemed to come out of the blue to the case worker, but Lanceâs father and uncle had been trying to get Percy out of that cult almost as soon as he joined and had made plans and preparations in case he left. Â When theyâd gotten old and become sicker, theyâd asked Lance to take over in case Percy or anyone else got out.
Lance hadnât actually been expecting to keep that promise, but he wasnât going to just abandon his kin. Â âNow, where is he?â
âCalhoun, Mississippi.â
After exchanging a bit more information, Lance promised to be there tomorrow and hung up to go get ready. Â He threw his things into an overnight bag, made some calls to customers to let them know heâd have to delay some repairs, and cleaned up the guest room. Â He called in a guest room, but it was more like a storage room that someone had shoved a bed into for some reason. Â Heâd have to find somewhere else to keep the boxes now.
Most of them ended up in Lanceâs room. Â He decided this was fine for now, got into his truck, and started driving.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lance got to Calhoun with no problems and went to the CPS building first thing in the morning. He introduced himself to the secretary, was taken to a large room in the back, and sat down to wait.
After several minutes of waiting, the door opened to a middle-aged woman with a clipboard. Â She smiled at Lance. Â âHello, Iâm Wanda Byrd.â
Lance nodded in greeting. Â âLance Kingsman.â
Wanda nodded back before looking behind her. Â âCâmon. One foot in front of the other.â
A kid, 11 or 12 shuffled in. Â He was hunched over and hugging himself. Â He glanced at Lance nervously before looking away. Â Lance noticed that he had the Kingsman hair: Orange hair that quickly faded to bright yellow with a black lock at the front. Â The kid also had the odd orange-brown eyes that sometimes popped up in their family.
âHey kid.â Lance got up off the chair, noting he was about the same size as the kid. Â âItâs Arthur, right?â
Arthur nodded. âYes sir.â
âRight, Iâm gonna be honest. Â I have no idea how to do this,â admitted Lance. Â That got Arthur to look at Lance again. Â âI have no experience with kids. Â Iâm making this up as I go along. Â I might say something that upsets you, but itâs not intentional. Â Iâm just blunter than most people.â
Arthur blinked in confusion.
âNow, we donât know each other. Â Thatâs not your fault. Â Itâs not my fault.â Â Personally, Lance thought it was Percyâs fault, but he wasnât going to say that within the first five minutes of meeting the manâs son. Â âBut we are kin, and I would like to get to know you and help you. Iâm not sure how much I can help you, but Iâm certainly going to try to do as much as I can.â
Arthur shuffled. âIâŚWhy is everyone trying to help me?â
Wanda smiled at Arthur. Â âI know the leaders of your community said that the world is full of horrible people, but most people are genuinely good. Â People who will do what they can to help others.â
Arthur looked away. âBut I killed-â
âSomeone who was going to hurt you,â finished Wanda.
Lanceâs eyebrows rose to his hairline. Â Seems that someone had forgotten to share that piece of information with him. Arthurâs eyes darted towards Lance. âIâm not gonna judge ya.â Â He turned to the Wanda. Â âSo, how are we gonna do this?â
âWell, we need to see how the two of you interact with each other. Â Then we have to determine if youâll be able to deal with Arthurâs particular needs.â
Right. Â Kid probably needed therapy. Â Lance had some money saved up. Â They should be okay. Â He just needed to be sure the kid liked him. Â He still wasnât sure how to go about that, but he figured they could at least sit down while they got to know each other and pulled out the chair at the nearby table. Â It took a few moments for Arthur to follow his example with the caseworker right behind him.
âSo, what do you like to do?â asked Lance.
âIâŚâ  Arthur paused.  He looked lost.  âI donât know.â
ââŚâ  Okay, this was just wrong.  Lance turned to Wanda.  âDo we have to do this here or can it be anywhere in the city?â
âAs long as the two of you have supervision.â
Lance nodded. Seemed reasonable. Â âYou got any arcades around here?â
Wanda winced. âArthur doesnât seem comfortable around crowds yet.â
âAh, sorry, didnât think of that.â Â Lance thought a bit more. Â âWhat about a comic store? Â One with chairs?â
Surprisingly, the center listed three comic stores like this. Â Lance asked if any were near restaurants. Â That narrowed it down to one. Â Lance loaded them up into his truck and they were at the store roughly 20 minutes later.
âIf you see something that looks interesting, go ahead and grab it,â said Lance as he looked for anything he might like. Â Lance wasnât a huge comic fan, but he had read some as a kid. Â And comics had come a long way since then. Â Some comics were serious and had plots that were genuinely interesting even to adults. Â He should be able to find something he can read.
Arthur was just staring at the various comics in confusion. Â âWhich comes first?â
Lance paused. âMost of these comics have been running for decades.â
Arthur stared. âBut-how does anyone know whatâs going on?â
Aw Hell. Â This might be more complicated than Lance had thought. Â He looked around for maybe a graphic novel or a one shot and noticed several thick books that were the first volume of various Marvel titles. Â That ought to work. Â âTry these. Â Theyâre the first few issues from the 60âs.â
Arthur stared at the thicker volumes in confusion for several minutes. Â He eventually picked up The Incredible Hulk and cautiously read the first few pages. Â He frowned. âScience doesnât work like this.â
âHm?â
âRadiation poisoning does not give people special abilities.  It causes random mutations that vary cell by cell and causes the body to break down rapidly to the point where organs break down.  If one somehow survives, they would definitely suffer from various types of cancers.  Besides that, Dr. Banner breaks the Law of Conservation of Mass.  Perhaps energy could be converted into mass, but that would only be possible during the explosion, and changing back into his normal form would cause some sort of release of energy.  And the physics are all wrongâŚâ
âThey care more about the story than the science,â interrupted Lance.  Arthur abruptly seemed to shrink back from him.  Lance mentally kicked himself.  âSorry, that came out wrong.â  Arthur gave him a surprised look.  âWhat I mean isâŚpeople donât read âem for the science.  Itâs to see people overcome odds that they normally wouldnât be able to, and powers make it so that they are more capable of that. Yeah, some of âem donât make sense. The writers arenât scientists so they have to do some guesswork.  Itâs just good fun.â
âFunâŚâ  Arthur stared at the comic.  âIâŚCan I have fun?â
Lance nodded. âYeah, you just have to figure out what you enjoy doing. Â You sounded pretty passionate about science just now. Â Want to tell me a bit more about what the writers got wrong?â
Arthur glanced between Lance and the comic a bit more before hesitantly nodding. Â The three of them sat down at one of the tables with their purchases. Â Arthur took a few minutes before he found something else that bothered him and started talking about it, showing more knowledge on the subjects than Lance would have expected from a kid his age.
Lance made a note that Arthur was probably smarter than him.
Around noon, Lance decided it was time for lunch and hustled everyone to a burger restaurant.
Arthur stared at the burger and fries and milkshake like heâd never seen something like them before. Â Maybe he hadnât. Â âWhat do you usually eat?â
âRoasted meat. Cooked vegetables. Â Bread.â Â Arthur picked up a fry. Â âWhat is it?â
âHamburgers are beef between a couple of slices of bread basically,â said Lance. Â âYou can add things like tomatoes and lettuce and onions to them.â Â He pointed at the fries. Â âFrench fries are potatoes sliced and fried in oil and salted.â Â He pointed at the milkshake. Â âThatâs ice cream blended with milk. Â Ice cream is cream mixed with sugar and some other flavors and then frozen.â Lance took a bite of his own hamburger. âJust take one bite of each and we wonât nag you about it.â
Arthur cautiously bit a fry in half. Â He blinked in surprise as he chewed it and decided to eat the rest of the fry. Â Then he ate a few more. Â He took a cautious sip from his milkshake and blinked in surprise. He took another sip. Â He ate the rest of his fries. Â He drank some more of his milkshake. Â He studied his hamburger and took a bite, less cautious than before. He ate about half of his burger before Lance noticed Arthur was starting to look a bit sick. Â âYou donât have to eat it all.â
Arthur winced. âButâŚyou canât waste food.â
âYou shouldnât,â agreed Lance. Â âBut accidents happen. Â As long as you donât make a habit of it, donât feel too bad about it.â
Arthur gulped but stopped eating at least. Â Lance decided to count it as a win.
Lance wasnât entirely sure what to do after lunch. Â He considered a movie, but thought maybe it would be better if Arthur got his first movie experience in a controlled environment.
They ended up going to a library instead. Â Books were practically the same as movies except you had to come up with the pictures yourself.
Arthur seemed a lot more comfortable in the library than anywhere else theyâd been.  He went straight forâŚthe nonfiction section? Arthur studied where various subjects could be found and headed for one particular shelf where he grabbed a book on robotics.
Lance took a moment to grab a book on refurbishing cars and glanced towards Wanda. Â She just shrugged. Â Fine.
They went to a set of chairs where Lance and Arthur started reading. Â Lance occasionally glanced towards Arthur. Â Arthur seemed engrossed in his book. Â âSo, you like robots?â
âOh, uh, I like mechanical stuff,â explained Arthur. Â âAnd Iâve never gotten the chance to learn about robots before.â
Lance nodded. Â âIâm pretty fond of mechanical stuff too. Â Even repair cars for a living.â
Arthur looked up. âReally? Â Whatâs that like?â
It was the first time Arthur had asked about Lanceâs life, and Lance was relieved to answer. Â âItâs more fulfilling than youâd think. Â Been doing it since I was a kid. Â Got a junker of a car to fix up when it was getting around time for me to get a car. Â It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Â More expensive too, but I didnât give up. Â Asked local mechanics for advice. Â Read some books. Â Eventually, I got it running again, and I enjoyed working on it, so I thought I âd see if I could make a career out of it. Â It was hard work, and it took a while to pay off my student loans, but I canât see myself doing anything else.â
Arthur turned around the book he was reading so that a robot arm was showing. Â âCould you make an arm?â
Lance chuckled. âThatâs a bit outside my area of expertise.  I mostly work on cars.  I know enough do some repairs around the house, like the air conditioning unit or the oven.  ThatâsâŚâ He pointed at the picture.  ââŚa lot more complicated.â
Arthur frowned and turned the book around to look at the picture. Â âI wanted to build robots, but we didnât have anything like that.â
âThatâsâŚspecific,â said Lance.  He wasnât sure what Arthur could do with that, but with how many things were automated nowadays he could probably find something.  âWell, I donât think youâll be able to take any mechanical courses until high school, but I can get you started on the basics when I have some free time.â
Arthur gave Lance a startled look. Â âWhat do you mean?â
Now Lance was a bit confused. Â âYou like robots?â Â Arthur nodded. Â âYou like science?â Â Arthur nodded again. Â âWould you like to make a living building robots?â Â Arthur nodded. Â âThen youâll need to take the proper courses to get into college and learn how to do that.â
Arthur gaped at Lance. âYou-youâre okay with me making robots for a living?â
Lance nodded. Â âThe way things are going itâll be a good field to get into, and even if you decide robots arenât for you, youâll still be pretty good at fixing things, and thingsâll always need fixing.â Â Arthur was still staring. Â âOkay, Iâm thinking Iâm missing something. Â Whatâs got you so gobsmacked?â
âYouâre letting me choose what to do!â exclaimed Arthur, getting a few hushes.
Lance grunted. Â ââCourse I am. Â Itâs your life. Â You should get to choose how to live it.â Â He paused. âWell, as long as youâre not hurting yourself or anyone else. Â No drugs or stealing or the like.â
Arthur nodded, still looking shocked. Â âAre children always allowed to choose what to become?â
âWell, they might change their mind. Â Canât grow up to be a dinosaur.â Â That got a snort from Arthur. Â âAnd well, you shouldnât encourage someone who wants to join a gang or the like. Â Still, itâs best to let people choose what they want to be on their own. Â Most people want to do what they enjoy, and that makes sense. Â If you enjoy something, you do it when you have free time, and you become good at it. Â And people want jobs done well and correctly the first time since it saves everyone time and money.â
Arthur blinked. âHuh. Â I never thought about it like that. Â I was always told my role would be chosen by my commander when I was old enough.â
Lance snorted and shook his head. Â âStupid.â
Arthur bit his lip. âSo, you would be all right with me pursuing a career in making robots? Â Even if it was unrealistic?â
âI donât think itâs unrealistic,â said Lance. Â âAnd even if it was, Iâd at least let you give it a try while making sure you had useful skills for a backup job.â
âLike fixing cars?â suggested Arthur.
Lance nodded. Â âOr cooking or child care. Â Things that will always be in demand.â
âIâm not allowed near children,â said Arthur rather nervously.
âWhy?â
Arthurâs eyes widened. âI, uh, I wasnâtâŚThey didnâtâŚâ Arthur trailed off.  âI donât want to talk about it.â
âFair enough.â Arthur would talk about it when he was ready.
âSo, um, you want me to live with you?â asked Arthur. Â Lance nodded. Â âAnd you donât mind me doing what I want as long as no one gets hurt?â Â Lance nodded. Â âIncluding working with robots when I grow up?â Â Lance nodded. Â âEven though weâve never met.â Â Lance nodded. âJust because we happen to be related.â
âItâs more than that,â said Lance. Â âYou need help. Â Have needed help for a while from the sound of it, and no one would step up. Â Now, a lot of people could help you. Â Would you trust them?â Â Arthur shook his head? Â âDo you trust me?â Â Arthur shook his head. Â âDidnât think so. Â Canât really blame ya either. Â But I know a thing or two about our family. Â Like the fact thatâs your natural hair color. Â Your family had a Knights of the Round Table naming theme.â Â He gave Arthur a pointed look. Â âThat your old man had a short temper and refused to believe anything was his fault.â Â Arthur winced. Â âYeah, and I bet the sort of people he fell in with were pretty similar to him.â Arthur nodded. Â âThatâs all the reason I need.â
Arthur looked down in thought for several moments before finally looking up and looking Lance in the eye.  âOkay. IâllâŚIâll try to make this work.â
Lance chuckled. Â âThatâs my line.â Â He glanced towards Wanda, who gave him a nod and a smile.
It took Vivi way too long to find a hospital in her opinion, but she managed to find one and pull up into the emergency room parking area with a screech of tires. She ran through the door. Â âMy friends are hurt!â
To the credit of the staff, they took one look at her bloody clothes and ran towards the door. Vivi was right behind them (She briefly noted that some police had shown up at some point.) and opened the van door. Mystery quickly jumped out while a couple of nurses climbed in to examine Sydney and Arthur. Â Sydney was quickly helped out (That was a good sign, right?) while the nurses shouted that they needed a gurney for Arthur.
Vivi didnât even get to go into the back with them because the police intercepted her and demanded to know what had happened. Â Vivi understood in the back of her mind that it looked like someone or something had attacked them, and they needed to be sure it wasnât Vivi or that there was some sort of psycho running around.
The only problem was that she had no idea what happened.  Theyâd been on a road trip, on their way toâŚshe couldnât remember where. Some place rumored to be haunted of course.  Anyway, theyâd been on their way to the location and then sheâd been driving the van and Arthur and Sydney had been injured in the back and she had no idea what had happened between the two.
Vivi tried to figure out what had happened.  SomethingâŚThey must have been attacked or something, and Arthur and Sydney had jumped forward to defend her and Mystery like they tended to do, but that didnât make sense because Arthur tended to hang back when the threat was ephemeral, and Sydney was a long-range attacker.
Okay, maybe it was a physical attacker. Â Arthur at the front, Sydney supporting from the back. Â And they managed to get past Arthurâs defense and remove his arm, hard as that was to believe, and then ripped out Sydneyâs eye.
Wait. Â No. Â The threat would have done more damage to Sydney if that was the case, and Vivi wouldâve gotten hurt too because no way was she going to let anything hurt her two BFFs.
Different direction. It looked like Sydneyâs eye had been ripped out of its socket. Â So something got up close to her. Â Still probably a physical threat because Vivi didnât see how a metaphysical threat could get close enough to Sydney to do that. Â Maybe it caught them by surprise and went for Sydney first, maybe considering her the biggest threat because of her powers. Â Then Arthur tried to defend them and got hurt. Â And Vivi did nothing? Â That didnât make any sense. Â Thereâs no way Vivi would just sit back and let them do all the work!
Maybe sheâd just somehow gotten really lucky? Â Mystery seemed uninjured too though, and wouldnât it make more sense for three of them to be injured if it was just luck? Â Maybe they managed to get to the safe zone they set up, but how would Vivi drag both of them to the safe zone?
None of this made any sense!
Vivi took several deep breaths, relieved that the police were leaving her alone. Â Letâs try this one more time. Â Arthur missing an arm. Â Sydney missing an eye. Â No other injuries? Â Hard to say. Theyâd both been covered in so much blood it would hide any other injuries. Â Vivi and Mystery are both okay, if shaken and missing memories. Were Sydney and Arthur missing memories? Â Sydney had certainly been confused so it seemed likely. Â Maybe she could ask Sydney if she was still awake.
Except she couldnât find Sydney anywhere.
Oh God. Â Had Sydney had another serious injury Vivi had missed? Â Vivi waved down a passing nurse. Â âExcuse me, my friends, they were hurt really bad, and I canât find Sydney. Â She was-was missing her-â Â She couldnât finish.
The nurse seemed to catch on. Â âSheâs in the operating room.â
And Vivi slapped herself upside the head. Â Of course she needed surgery! Â Parts of her skull and optic nerve had been visible. Â âAre Arthur and Sydney going to be all right?â Â Vivi didnât think sheâd survive if they didnât make it.
âSydney should be fine.  Losing her eye is going to affect her for the rest of her life, but her life isnât in any danger.  Arthur, the young manâŚ?â  Vivi nodded. âHe lost a lot of blood.  The doctors stabilized him, but it did a lot of damage.  Weâll just have to hope that heâs strong enough to pull through at this point.â
Vivi swallowed. âIâŚI see.  Thank you.  I-I need to call their families.  Excuse me.â
It had only just occurred to Vivi that she needed to call Lance and Sydney Senior. Â She wasnât looking forward to it.
Vivi took a few moments to pet Mystery and calm down and gather strength. Â Then she dialed Sydney Seniorâs number. Â She kind of wanted to put off talking to Lance a bit more.
âHello, Sydney Scoville Sr. Â How can I be helping you?â asked Sydney Senior in a fake accent.
Vivi sobbed. âMr. ScovilleâŚâ
âVivi?â Â All joviality disappeared from Sydney Seniorâs voice. Â âIs everything okay?â
Vivi shook her head. âNo, no, there was some sort ofâŚsome sort of accident.  Arthur and Sydney were hurt really badly and I need you and Lance here.â
âOkay, okay, how bad is it?â
âSydneyâs eye is gone.â
âHer eye is gone?!â
âAnd Arthurâs arm is gone.â
âBloody Hell, what the %@^%*&^ ^$**% happened?!â
âI-I donât know.â
âHow the (*)(&( do you not know how your friends lost their body parts?!â
Vivi sobbed. Â âI donât know. Â I just remember being in the van, and then I was suddenly driving, and there was blood everywhere, and I found Arthur and Sydney and Mystery in the back, and I drove to the hospital.â
âOkay, okay, just tell me where you are, and Iâll get there as quickly as I can,â said Sydney Senior.
It took Vivi a moment to track down someone who could tell her the address. Â As soon as she rattled it off, Sydney Sr hung up. Â Vivi sniffled. Â That had been bad. Â Lance was probably going to be worse. Â She needed a moment before dialing his number.
Lance took a few moments to answer. Â âKingsman Mechanics.â
âLance, itâs Vivi.â
Lance was silent. âWhat happened?â
âI donât know. I woke up in the van, and Arthur and Sydney were hurt, but I canât remember how they got hurt or what happened at all, which doesnât make any sense-â
âHow bad is it?â interrupted Lance.
âSydney lost an eye. Arthur lost an arm. Â Theyâre in surgery.â Â Vivi let out a wail. Â âThey donât know if Arthurâs going to wake up!â
âThat bad then. What about you and Lewis?â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat.  âIâm okay.  Iâm okayâŚâ
âGood. Â And Lewis?â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âWhat?â
âIs Lewis okay?â Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. âYou didnât mention him.â
âDidnât mentionâŚAre you talking about Mystery?â
âHow did you get-Iâm talking about Lewis!â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âTalking about who?â
âLewis.â Â Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âYour boyfriend.â
Vivi blinked. âI donât have a boyfriend,â she said mechanically.
It took several moments for Lance to respond. Â âHow many people are in your ghost hunting club?â
âThree plus Mystery.â
Lance let out what Vivi suspected was a Gaelic curse. Â âVivi, you need to call your parents. Â Iâm going to call the Peppers.â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âI already called Sydneyâs dad.â
âGood, now give me the address of the hospital slowly so I can write it down.â Â Vivi had to say it a few times because she wanted to rattle it off too quickly for Lance to write it down. Â âGot it. Â Iâll close up the shop and drive down.â
âGreat.â
âAnd we are going to have a very long talk once I get there,â said Lance, the threat of a promise in his voice.
Vivi swallowed. âYes sir.â Â This was going to end badly.
Now it was time for her parents. Â She stared at it for a moment. Â Theyâd warned her. Â She hadnât listened. Â Why hadnât she listened? Â Theyâd known what they were talking about. Â She knew they knew what they were talking about. Â She still had chosen to ignore their lessons.
It took Mystery whining and pawing at her arm to get her to finish dialing the number.
âHello, this is the Yukino residence,â greeted Serena.
Vivi let out a sob. âMom.â
âVivi? Â Honey, whatâs wrong?â
âI-I-â  Vivi took a shuddering breath.  âI think I got Arthur and Sydney hurt really badâŚâ
âDid you call their families?â asked Serena.
Vivi nodded before recalling that her mother couldnât see it. Â âYes. Â Theyâre not happy.â
âTheyâre just worried,â Serena reassured them. Â âNow, do you know where you are?â
Vivi nodded and rattled off the hospital address for the third time that night.
âOkay, your father and I will be there as soon as we can,â said Serena. Â âWeâll see if your grandmother can come as well.â
âOkayâŚâ
âUntil then, you kids take care of yourselves, and keep Mystery nearby at all times,â instructed Serena.
âYes maâam,â said Vivi.
âAnd remember, we love you.â
âI love you too,â Vivi replied automatically before ending the call.  She looked to Mystery, who whined and gave her face a lick. Vivi hiccupped and wrapped her arms around him.  âI messed upâŚâ
There was Vivi who sat in on his religion lessons and then talked with him about them. Â Uncle Lance had even started picking him up later during the week. Â On the weekend, Arthur found himself spending a couple of hours talking about religion and then myths and then ghosts, and it felt so natural.
And then he started school. Â He should have entered in 7th grade, but the teachers told him that he tested high enough that he could skip a grade. Â Since Vivi was in 9th grade, that seemed like a good idea at the time. Â He didnât think heâd make friends at school.
And then a couple of 6th graders sat at his table on the first day of school and spent the whole lunch speaking with him. Â And they did it the next day, and the next, and the rest of the week. Â Then the next week. Â Then they started meeting before lunch started. Â Then Lewis started bringing lunches for Arthur. Â Then Sydney started bringing comics and videos for Arthur to borrow.
And Arthur realized that he wanted to spend more time with them.
That was kind of tricky though. Â He spent most of his time after school learning from Mr. Yukino, and he didnât really want to explain to Lewis and Sydney why he needed those lessons. Theyâd been so accepting so far, but he didnât want to push them.
He guessed that they could maybe spend time with each other on the weekend, but he had no idea how to go about that. Â He guessed theyâd spend time at someoneâs house, but he didnât know how to ask. Would their parents be all right with a strange kid spending time at their house?
Arthur only had one person he was comfortable with asking. Â âVivi, how do you ask someone if they want to spend time with you?â he asked as soon as Mr. Yukino ended the religion lesson.
Vivi blinked and then grinned. Â âArthur! Did you make a friend?â
âMaybe. Â Plural.â
Vivi squealed and gave him a hug. Â âOh, Iâm so proud of you! Â Talking to people and making friends!â
âThey, uh, actually just sat at my table and wouldnât leave,â admitted Arthur.
âBut still, you talked to them. Â You didnât leave or turn them away,â reasoned Vivi. Â âThatâs wonderful!â
Arthur blushed. âI-thanks. I think?â
âSo, what are they like?â asked Vivi. Â âCâmon details!â
âTheyâŚtheir names are Lewis and Sydney.  Theyâre a boy and a girl.  Lewis is really tall.  Sydneyâs small.  Sydney talks about pretty much anything.  Lewis adds to what she talks about.  Sydney really likes comics.  Lewis likesâŚJapanese cartoons.â
âAnime,â corrected Vivi. Â âSome people really take offense at calling anime Japanese cartoons.â
âDo you?â asked Arthur.
âNormally, yes,â admitted Vivi. Â âBut youâre kind of a special case. Â You didnât even know anime was a thing until a few months ago. Â Now, tell me more about these two.â
âLewis likes cooking. Sometimes heâll bring food for Sydney and I. Â Sydney says he should use his free time to have some fun, but Lewis says cooking is fun. He has to cook separate dishes for Sydney because sheâs a vegetarian.â Â He grinned. Â âSydney isnât a very good cook.â
Vivi took a moment to memorize and appreciate the rare smile on Arthurâs face. Â âIt sounds like you guys are getting close. Â Do I need to be jealous?â she teased.
Arthurâs smile was instantly wiped away and replaced with panic. Â âN-no! Â Youâre my friend still! Â I just kind of want to be friends with them too!â
Vivi pat his back. âRelax. Â Iâm joking. Â You can be friends with all three of us.â Â She grinned. Â âActually, why donât you bring them over here?â
âNo!â  Vivi and Ben both jumped at Arthurâs shout.  He winced.  âNo, not yet.  Iâll have to explain to them why Iâm getting lessons from your dad, and I donât want them to know about theâŚâ  Arthur swallowed.  âItâŚIt was a cult, wasnât it?â
Whoa.  That was the first time Arthur had ever acknowledged heâd been in a cult.  At least around Vivi.  He looked like he was about to cry.  Vivi wrapped him up in a hug and rubbed his back for a bit.  âHey, itâs okay.  Youâre out of there.  Youâre safe. Nobody has to know about what happened to you if you donât want them to.â  She paused.  Actually, if he really wanted to be friends with these two, he would probably have to tell them eventually.  Maybe not now, maybe not even for a few years, but if Arthur didnât want to lose their trustâŚheâd have to come clean.  But for now, it was way too soon.  âIs there any reason we canât go to their houses or your uncleâs?â
Arthur sniffled. âThereâs not room at the garage, and Uncle Lance will be working. Â And Iâm a stranger. Â Their parents wouldnât want me around their children without supervision, would they?â
Vivi chuckled. âOh, Arthur, if that was an issue, no one would ever make any friends.â Â Her father had left them alone after all. Â âIf it bothers you that much, you can ask if they want to meet up at the local arcade. Â Iâve been meaning to take you there anyway.â
âThatâs where they have a bunch of videogame machines that you have to pay to play, right?â asked Arthur.
âPretty much. Donât worry. Â Itâs pretty cheap,â reassured Vivi.
âUncle Lance has been giving meâŚhe called it an allowance.  I donât know why heâs giving me money.â
âEh, some people make their kids do chores in exchange for spending money, and some just give âem money,â explained Vivi. Â âHe might change that once you get more comfortable living with him and have more free time. Â Or if you really misbehave, but I canât imagine you doing something bad enough to lose allowance privileges.â
âUm, well, I have money for that.â Â Honestly, Arthur hadnât used any of the money Uncle Lance had been giving him. Â He didnât have anything in particular he wanted to buy, and Uncle Lance was supplying him with everything he needed.
Vivi nodded. âOkay, so, just ask Lance for permission since youâll have to go on the weekend or skip a class. Â Then ask Sydney and Lewis if they want to hang out outside of school.â
Arthur bit his lip. âWhat if they say no?â
âWhat if they say yes?â countered Vivi. Â âYou gotta at least try.â
Arthur swallowed. âRight.  Youâre right.  IâllâŚIâll talk to them about it.â
Arthur brought it up the next day before he could lose his nerve.  âI want to hang out with you guys after school, but I donât know if youâre allowed to have strangers over so we could go to an arcade, and maybe my other friend Vivi could come with us?â
Sydney and Lewis blinked at Arthur. Â âWow, you talked even faster than me just now,â commented Sydney.
âOh, uh, should I say it again?â asked Arthur.  He wasnât actually sure he could thoughâŚ
âThatâs okay. Â I think I got it,â said Lewis. Â He turned to Sydney. Â âWould you mind?â
âNope, but how would that work?â
Lewis winced. âWeâll have to go to my house because I look after my little sister for my parents,â he explained. Â âI guess we could go to the arcade during the weekend if Sydneyâs mom or dad wouldnât mind looking after Belle.â
âOh, no, thatâs okay! I donât mind going to your house,â said Arthur.
Lewis chuckled nervously. Â âUm, yeah, thatâs, uh, because you donât know. Â I live in a former funeral home.â
Arthur blinked. âOh.â
âThatâs got a cemetery right behind it,â continued Lewis.
âOhâŚâ  Arthur was starting to get a bit nervous.
âItâs haunted,â interjected Sydney.
âThe house or the cemetery?â asked Arthur.
Sydney nodded. âYes.â
Lewis chuckled nervously. Â âIâve lived there since I was a little kid, and Sydneyâs been coming over for almost as long. Â Itâs perfectly safe,â he reassured Arthur. Â âIt just makes some people uncomfortable.â
Arthur nodded. Just hearing about it was making him uncomfortable. Â Plus, what sort of effect would he have on the haunting? Â What if he attracted something nasty? Â Or made the ghosts already there violent?
Sydney noticed the subject was bothering Arthur and clapped a hand on his shoulder. Â âDonât worry. Â Iâll protect you from the ghosts,â she promised.
Lewis nodded. âThe ghosts are less active when Sydneyâs around for some reason. Â We donât know why.â
Sydney leaned in close to Arthur. Â âI think theyâre scared of me,â she whispered conspiratorially.
Arthur blinked and studied Sydney. Â She was smaller than usual, skinny, no muscle tone, had a large pair of glasses, and pretty much no attention span. Â She wasnât that scary unless you were afraid of talking to people. Â Actually, she was kind of adorable when she wasnât being overwhelming.
Sheâd definitely take offense to that.
âIâŚâ  Arthur took a deep breath.  âVivi likes ghosts,â he admitted.
âOh, right Vivi. Youâve mentioned her a few times,â said Lewis. Â âSheâs a few years older, right?â
âSheâs 14,â clarified Arthur.
âOkay, that might be a bit iffy,â admitted Lewis. Â âBut Iâll ask my parents if she can come too. Â Iâll let you know what they say.â
Sydneyâs hand shot into the air. Â âAnd Iâll bring videogames and comics and videos and DVDs! Â Maybe weâll find something new you like!â
Arthur nodded. âRightâŚThank you.â  He couldnât quite bring himself to say how much it meant to him.
Belle Pepper was born July 23rd in Tempo General Hospital. Â It was the middle of the night, so Lewis ended up spending the night with the Scovilles. Â He didnât actually get a lot of sleep though because he was so nervous about what was going to happen, even with all the hugs he got from Sydney.
The next day he and the Scovilles went to the hospital. Â Lewis stared at the door, his stomach doing flip flops. Â Sydney slipped her hand into his and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Â Her dad pushed the door open.
Savina was lying in the hospital bed, holding a pink bundle, Frigg by her side. Â Both were grinning. Â Lewis swallowed.
âLewis, come over here,â asked Frigg.
Lewis did so automatically. Â Then Savina was slipping Belle into his arms and Frigg was arranging Lewisâ arms so that he was supporting Belleâs head along with holding her. Â Lewis froze up and stared at the tiny newborn in his arms.
Sydney peered at Belle. Â âIâm not the smallest anymore!â
Lewis let out a laugh. Belle wiggled and let out a cry. Lewis panicked and tried bouncing her a bit. Â She seemed to calm down.
âHow come sheâs wearing little gloves?â asked Sydney.
âBecause her nails are thin enough that she could accidentally cut her skin with them,â explained Savina.
Sydney and Lewis both shuddered. Â âThatâs scary,â said Sydney. Â She poked at one of Belleâs gloved hands. Â Said hand grabbed at her finger. Â âBabies actually do that?â
Lewis continued to study Belle.  She wasâŚsmaller than he would have thought.  Do people really start off this small?  And her skin was a shade of pink he wasnât expecting.  She was breathing quietly as she slept.
She really was completely helpless. Â More so than Lewis could ever remember being.
And Lewis felt a sudden surge of protectiveness towards the newest Pepper.
He wasnât going to ever let anything happen to her.

It took a surprisingly short time to set up the first faux investigation at Lewisâs house.
âWe have a limited number of cameras for recording video so we have to determine the best locations for them. Â Where would you say the activity is the most concentrated?â asked Hiro.
âMy room, but thatâs probably just because itâs my room,â said Lewis.
Hiro nodded. Â âA bit iffy, but reasonable. Â We can leave a camera in there, but Iâll need permission from your parents for it to run overnight.â
âDonât forget the basement,â suggested Frigg from the kitchen. Â âWhateverâs down there is unpleasant enough that we put off going down there until Sydneyâs around.â
âI knew it,â muttered Sydney.
âWas that where the bodies were prepared?â asked Hiro.
Frigg shrugged. âIâm not sure. Â Weâre not the first people to live here, and one of the former occupants must have cleared everything out.â
âWeâll place one or two cameras in the basement and save the last in case we find something notable during the investigations,â decided Hiro. Â âYou can also set up a few things ahead of time. Â I like stretching very fine and fragile thread across doorways and laying out a layer of powder on the floor, usually flour. Â We wonât be doing that this time, as I donât think Lewisâ parents would appreciate the mess, but can anyone tell me what purpose these serve?â
âShould I answer?â asked Vivi.
âLetâs wait and give the others a chance to see if they can come up with anything,â said Hiro.
âTo trip people?â asked Sydney.
âBit of the opposite,â said Hiro.
âGhosts would go through the thread, but people would break it?â asked Arthur.
Hiro nodded. âCorrect. Â It will help you figure out if any activity in the room was due to a ghost or a human. Â Now, what do you think about the flour?â
âFootprints?â suggested Lewis.
Hiro nodded. âYes. Â Humans and animals leave footprints. Â Ghosts donât. Â In addition, air currents could shift them letting you know that there is a draft or something similar. Â You might learn or come up with additional tricks to help you out. Â There are all sorts of techniques.â Â Hiro paused to pull out a large sheet of paper, which he unfolded to show a complicated looking circle with various symbols and kanji along it. âThis is a protective circle. Itâs a good idea to set one up so that if you run into something particularly nasty you can retreat to a safe location to regroup. Â They arenât full proof though. Â Itâs best to find some way to escape.â
âWhy is it so small?â asked Sydney.
âBecause this is the biggest piece of paper I could find,â deadpanned Hiro. Â âTheyâre normally a lot larger to fit several people inside.â Â Ben barked. âAnd animals as well.â
âNot a lot of investigators use animals,â said Vivi. Â âBut weâve got Ben.â
âAnimals are much more sensitive to spiritual presences than most humans, and dogs are often protective of their family. Â Theyâll do whatever they can to keep you alive,â explained Hiro. Â He nodded to Lewis. Â âYouâre at least as sensitive, probably more so, but the rest of the children canât detect anything on their own yet.â
Sydney perked up. âYet?â
âAh. Â My family has a history of spiritual powers that manifest in our teens or early adulthood,â explained Hiro. Â âI have some sensory abilities myself, and I expect Vivi will someday as well.â
âThere are also items I suggest you keep on you at all times: Â Holy water, salt, smudge sticks, pepper spray. Â That incudes you Sydney. Â We donât know how your power works exactly, so I would rather you be safe rather than sorry.â
Sydney nodded. âSo, now what?â
âNow, I show you how to set up the cameras.â
The quick demonstration and lecture went a bit over Sydney and Lewisâ head, but Arthur seemed to understand the procedure.
âNow, usually, you would have one member of the group watch the monitors for anything out of the ordinary.â Â Hiro nodded to Sydney. Â âNo offense meant Sydney, but since you seem to scare away ghosts you would likely be the one on the monitors a good portion of the time.â
âAwâŚâ
âBut not tonight,â continued Hiro. Â âThis is just for practice, and we already know the house and cemetery are haunted. No reason to try and draw ghosts out.â
âIs that something we have to do?â asked Arthur.
âDonât worry. Itâs only small things,â said Hiro. âAsking if anyone is there, saying you mean no harm, simple nonthreatening things to catch their attention.â
âItâs harmless,â added Vivi.
âUsually. Â Which is why you have to watch what you say,â said Hiro. Â Couldnât have her thinking there was no risk. Â He wanted her to have a long life. Â âNow, weâll be moving to the cemetery. Â Everyone has their religious symbols?â Â The kids held up necklaces with religious symbols, mostly Christian and Shinto. âGood, always keep them on you during an investigation. Â It wouldnât be a bad idea to keep them on hand during daily life as well.â
âDinner will be ready before too long,â interjected Frigg.
âWe wonât be gone for too long,â reassured Hiro.
Five minutes later, they were in the cemetery. Â Hiro could see the ghosts watching them curiously. Â âUsually, you wander around a bit, maybe focusing on any graves belonging to known ghosts or having a connection to the investigation.â
Lewis raised a hand. âUm, a lot of them look haunted to me.â
Hiro nodded. âThey probably always will. Youâll need to do some research beforehand to determine which gravestones to focus on. Â I usually start by asking locals, looking up newspaper articles to determine how accurate their accounts are, and going through records to see how possible it is.â
âThatâs a lot of homework,â said Sydney.
Hiro had to chuckle a bit at that. Â âI suppose thatâs one way to look at it.â Â He took out a camera. Â âNow, weâll take a few pictures as we walk around since ghosts sometimes show up in photos.â
Arthur perked up. âOh! Â Thatâs a pretty new model!â
Hiro nodded. Â âI prefer digital cameras. Â Some insist film works better, but personally I feel the two are equally effective, but digital cameras provide certain advantages. Â You can take more pictures. Â This is important because I recommend taking at least three pictures in quick succession. Â If the same odd phenomena appear in all three pictures with trackable progression, itâs probably a trick of the camera or a light reflection. Â It itâs only in one, it could be supernatural. Â Youâll need to examine it further to be sure. Â If you do use up all the space on a camera, you can go back and delete any that youâre sure have no supernatural evidence. Â The only downside is that there are no negatives and skeptics might claim you photoshopped something. Â Not much you can do about that.â
Hiro took a moment to take three quick shots of a grave where a young manâs ghost was floating. âNow, letâs see what weâve got.â
All three photos were completely normal. Â Lewis looked between them and the ghost in confusion. Â âI had some warning,â said the ghost.
Hiro nodded. âGhosts can prevent photo artifacts if they concentrate.â Â Hiro wasnât entirely sure how they did this.
Ben walked over to a seemingly random grave and started pawing at it while the ghost floating about it pet him. Â Hiro took a few more pictures. Â âAh. Looks like I got something this time.â He lowered the camera so the children could see the wisps of smoke in one of the pictures. Â âItâs not very impressive, but most ghost photos arenât. If you get a clear figure, then thereâs a good chance itâs a fake. Â Not that there arenât genuine ghost photos that manage to capture clear figures, but thatâs pretty rare since they usually require a powerful ghost or a ghost willingly expending large amounts of energy, which most wonât do for the sake of self-preservation.â Â The children nodded along. Â Good.
They spent another few minutes wandering around taking pictures and using a recording device to hopefully record answers to harmless questions such as âWhat is your name?â or âWhy are you here?â Â âI think thatâs enough,â declared Hiro.
Arthur looked relieved (Not that Hiro could blame him. Â Several of the ghosts had decided to follow him around.). Â Lewis and Sydney looked happy enough with their activities. Vivi looked annoyed. Â âThatâs it? Â We hardly did anything!â
Hiro shrugged. Â âItâs not a real investigation. Â Weâre not trying to figure anything else. Â Youâre just learning the basics, and your friends are younger than you and will have to go to bed at an earlier time.â
âI miss our sleepovers,â muttered Lewis.
âBesides, the Peppers looked like they were almost done cooking, and Iâd rather we didnât keep them waiting,â finished Hiro. Â The mention of food caught Vivi and Benâs attention. Â He knew that would work. Â The two ate so much it was next to impossible to not distract them with the promise of food.
Thankfully, the Peppers had produced enough food for an extra dozen peopleâŚand had made a few servings of less spicy food.  Arthur was visibly relieved.  âThank you so much.â
âOh, itâs no problem. We know not everyone enjoys spicier food so weâve learned to make less potent portions when we have guests over,â explained Frigg.
âI think I will be taking some of that as well,â said Hiro. Â He didnât mind spicy, but this smelled overwhelmingly so.
Ben was trying to beg food from Savina. Â âNo.â She was completely unmoved. Â Looks like Ben was going to be sneaking food away. Hiro hoped heâd be able to come up with an excuse for the missing food.
Vivi came to driving the van on a long stretch of road.  She instantly realized something was wrong because A:  She was driving.  Arthur and Sydney did everything they could to keep her from driving. B:  She had no memory of how she got here.  She remembered sitting in the passenger seat talking to the others, then suddenly she was driving andâŚcovered in blood?!
She slammed on the brakes as she heard a scream of pain from the back. Â âHoly shit!â Â She threw the car into park and turned towards the back. Â âDo you guys-â Â The question died in her throat.
Sydney was hunched over Arthur and rapidly trying to wrap bandages from the first aid kit around where Arthurâs left arm used to be while Mystery was whimpering nearby. Â Vivi vaulted over the chairs. Â âWhat happened?!â
âI-I donât know,â slurred Sydney. Â âIâm just here but I wasnât here, and I dunno how I got from there to here.â
Vivi ripped off her scarf and quickly wrapped it around Arthurâs chest and injury. Â Vivi knew it wasnât clean, but it was a lot more effective. Â âWhatâs going on?! Â What happened?!â demanded Vivi.
âI dunno,â murmured Sydney.
Vivi was about ready to demand Sydney try and remember when she noticed blood dripping off Sydneyâs face. Â The blood pattern on Sydneyâs shirt indicated contact transfer rather than being sprayed by the blood. Â There shouldnât be enough of Arthurâs blood to be dripping off of her. Â âSydney, are you okay?â
ââŚMy face hurts,â muttered Sydney, finally looking up.
Vivi nearly lost her lunch (dinner?) when she saw that Sydneyâs right eye was gone, and whatever had removed it had made a mess as the skin around the area was badly torn up. Vivi swore she could see bone and even something that she suspected was Sydneyâs optic nerve. Â âHoly shit!â
Sydney blinked. âIs it bad?â
Vivi chose not to answer, instead ripping open a clean package of gauze, pressing it to the injury, managing to slap a bit of tape on it, and pressing Sydneyâs hand to it. âPress down on that!â
Sydney blinked and glanced at Arthur.  âBut what aboutâŚâ
âTry to keep pressure on him too!â Â God, Arthur was so pale, and he was barely bleeding. Â Was there any blood left in his body?
Vivi climbed back into the driverâs seat, threw the van into drive and slammed the accelerator into the floor.
Vivi had been having a boring day. Â Sheâd been planning on training with her dad, but heâd said someone had scheduled a private lesson so instead she was reading a book of ghost stories outside with Ben next to her.
Vivi was trying to figure out if the story about the silver man with a third eye was true when a short, stout man walked over, sat in one of the porch chairs, and opened a hunting magazine.
Vivi studied the man for a moment. Â He looked pretty tough even though he wasnât that much taller than her. Â His body shape sort of reminded Vivi of how dwarves were often portrayed in fantasy series. Â Plus she was pretty sure that was a wrestling championship belt he was wearing. Â Also, his hair was pretty cool looking. Â Orange and yellow with some black thrown in. Â It even extended to his beard. Â âHi mister!â
He glanced over the top of his magazine. Â âHey.â Was that an accent she heard?
âI havenât seen you before. Â Are you new?â
âNah. Â Just prefer to keep to myself,â said the man.
He definitely had an accent. Â There were some elements of the typical southern accent a good portion of Tempo had, but it also had a lilt that she hadnât heard from anyone else local. Vivi wondered if she could figure it out if they talked some more. Â If not, maybe after a bit of talking she would be able to ask without coming off as rude. Â âIâm Vivi. Whoâre you?â
âLance.â
She got a name! âDid you schedule the private lesson?â asked Vivi. Â âDad doesnât get many of those.â
Lance was silent. âMy nephew needs some help.â
That caught Viviâs attention. Â Nephew, not son. Â Was said nephew just visiting? Â Or was this a permanent situation? Â Was it a recent change or had it been like this for a while? Â Was there a way to ask without being nosy? Â âWhatâs his name?â
âArthur.â
Vivi giggled. âLike the king.â
Lance groaned. âYeah. Â The king.â Â Huh? Sore point?
A loud thump came from the dojo. Â Vivi looked in that direction in surprise. Â Wow, what were they doing in there? Â Vivi glanced towards Lance and saw him looking in the same direction with a furrowed brow. Â Was he worried?
Ben suddenly sat up and looked towards the dojo doors right before they were opened by Hiro. Viviâs greeting died on her tongue when she noticed that A: He was bleeding, and B: He looked furious. âDad?â
Hiroâs eyes darted to her before turning his attention to Lance. Â âWhy does your nephew know how to kill?â
Viviâs mouth dropped open. Â Lance winced, but didnât seem too shocked. Â âThat bad?â
âHe justâŚIf that knife had been realâŚâ  Hiro frowned and started pressing down on his head wound with a sigh.  âWere you even aware?â
Lance glanced at Vivi. âI only know what I told you before.â
Feeling curious, Vivi peered past her father and into the dojo. Â Inside was a boy a bit younger than her who was clearly related to Lance. He was hunched in on himself and looked like he was about to have a panic attack. Â He didnât look like a killer. Â He looked like a scared kid.
Ben stood and walked into the dojo. Â âBen?â Ben walked over to the boy, Arthur, and sniffed him. Â Arthur blinked and held out a hand. Â Ben licked Arthurâs hand before Arthur started petting him. Â Vivi debated for a moment before following Ben into the dojo. Arthur stopped petting Ben and looked up at her with wide eyes. Â Vivi waved. âHey.â
âHi,â said Arthur.
âSoâŚYou live with your uncle?â  Arthur nodded.  âIâm kind of surprised you managed to land a hit on my dad.  Heâs pretty tough.  Must be getting old.â  Speaking of which, she could hear the two men talking in hushed tones that she couldnât quite make out.
Arthur looked a bit uncomfortable. Â âI didnât mean to!â he said, an accent similar to his uncleâs coloring the words.
Vivi blinked. âOh, did you mess up a move? Â I do that all the time.â Â She huffed. Â âI just canât seem to move correctly when I try to copy what Dad shows me. Â I guess Iâm just not suited for fighting.â
âYouâre lucky,â muttered Arthur.
Vivi blinked. âHuh?â
Hiro walked back in, pressing some gauze to his head. Â âVivi, please step out so Arthur and I may continue the lesson.â
âCan I watch?â asked Vivi.
âYes, you can. No, you may not,â responded Hiro.
Vivi pouted at her fatherâs grammar correction and walked back outside with Ben on her heels. Hiro closed the door behind her. Vivi huffed and sat down near Lance. The silence was awkward so she turned towards him. Â âSo, where did Arthur learn to fight anyway?â
Lance gave her a look. âThatâs personal.â
âOkay.â Something about Lance just made it clear that was settled. Â âSo, whereâs Arthurâs parents?â
âNot here.â Once again Lance somehow made Vivi not want to pursue the subject even though she wanted to know.
It was like some sort of mundane super power.
âYou guys have pretty cool hair,â commented Vivi. Â âHow do you get it like that?â
âGel.â
Vivi waited. Lance didnât go into detail. âWait. Â That colorâs natural?!â
âYeah.â
How did that even work?! Â She guessed the orange to yellow could be the color fading somewhat, but what about the bits that were black? Â Especially the end of his beard? Â How do you even go from orange to black naturally? Â Vivi thought that sort of thing only showed up naturally in anime.
âŚActually considering some of the anime hair people came up with, this was pretty tame.  Vivi fingered her own black hair.
Her familyâs hair turned blue when their power awakened. Â Her father died his hair black to avoid questions simply because he didnât think he had the personality that would make dying his hair blue believable. Â Her Obaa-sanâs hair had turned gray before Vivi was born.
Vivi wanted blue hair. She didnât like the way black hair looked on her, didnât like how it looked with her clothes.  âIâm thinking of dying my hair blue,â she randomly said to Lance.  Lance gave a grunt in response.  âItâs kind of annoying how limited hair color is in humans, donât you think?  Mostly black and brown.  Some red and orange and yellow.  I think it would add more colorâŚMore eye colors would be nice too. We have more eye colors than hair colors, but itâs still mostly brown I think.  Some blue.  Some green. Hazel.  Gray or purple if youâre lucky.  I guess red if youâre albino.  No orange orâŚâ  She trailed off.  âActually, your eyes look kind of orange.  Maybe those are just super rare tooâŚâ
âPops up in the family,â said Lance as way of explanation.
Did Arthur have orange eyes too? Â Vivi made a note to check when he came out of the dojo because she was definitely sticking around for that.
âSo what do you do?â asked Vivi.
âCar mechanic.â
âOh!â Â A couple of things snapped into place in Viviâs head. âKingsman Mechanics!â
Sheâd never been there. Â Tempo was just big enough to have three garages. Â Two were big chain garages that you could find anywhere. Â The last was Kingsman mechanics, which everyone preferred to the other two. Â It was a bit out of the way and owned by the only employee, but the work was second to none, and the owner (Lance if Vivi was right.) was willing to do payment plans that other places wouldnât consider. Â Was apparently willing to barter to an extent if someone was in a tight spot. Â Even had a junkyard behind the shop that Vivi could only assume was for scavenging or something. Â When her father needed to have the carâs oil changed, heâd schedule at Kingsman Mechanics if he could get an appointment and they werenât too busy. Â The way heâd described the owner, he was shorter than most, muscular, no nonsense, practical, and Scottish.
Huh, so his accent must be a combination of Southern and Scottish. Â No wonder it was so unusual. Â âWhat got you into cars?â
ââŚSeemed like a waste of money to buy a car when I could fix one up for myself.â  Lance shrugged.  âTurned out I liked fixing up cars.â
Vivi nodded. âYeah, itâs lucky to get a job you enjoy.â Â She huffed. âI know what I wanna do, but Iâll probably have to get a second job or something.â Â Paranormal investigating wouldnât pay all the bills.
At this point, Baa-san suddenly appeared, walked over, and plopped several ofuda on Lanceâs leg. âPut those on your windows. Theyâll repel negative spirits.â Lance raised an eyebrow as Baa-san walked back into the house.
Vivi was more surprised by how many ofuda Baa-san had given Lance.  Why would he need that many so suddenly?  If heâd never needed them beforeâŚ
Unless they werenât for him.
âWhat exactly does your grandmother do for a living?â asked Lance.
âSheâs a former miko, Japanese shrine maiden, a sort of priestess,â explained Vivi.  âOfuda areâŚsort of like charms for luck or protection.â  Vivi took a closer look.  âLike Baa-san said, these are for repelling negative spirits that might try to hurt you. Kind of surprised she just came over and gave them to you.  Usually she asks a bit more about whatâs going on.â  Actually, now that Vivi was looking closer, she could see these were ofuda that Baa-san had made, not Vivi, which would make them stronger than what they usually gave out.  âAre you being followed around by something nasty?â
Lance glanced toward the dojo. Â Something to do with Arthur? Â Lance looked back at Vivi. Â âWhat exactly does your family do?â
âWell, like I said my Baa-san is a former miko, but still does little things out of habit. Dad is a theology teacher at the community college and teaches martial arts. Â Momâs a psychologist.â Â Vivi grinned. âBut we also occasionally do paranormal investigations. Â Not a lot though. Â Not much happens in Tempo.â
âUh huh.â Â Lance studied the ofuda for another few moments before stuffing them in his pocket. Â So he was keeping them! Â âAny other way to keep away ghosts?â
Vivi grinned. âHaving a priest bless your house usually helps. Â So does burning sage while praying. Â Some places sell sage bundled into sticks specifically for that purpose.â
âHm.â Â Lance looked down for several moments.
Vivi opened her mouth to try and ask Lance if anything odd had been going on at his house, but Ben headbutted her in the stomach. Â She huffed and gave him a look. Â He just yawned.
âDoes your dad give religion lessons?â asked Lance.
Vivi blinked. âWhat? Â At home?â Â Lance nodded. âI donât know. Â He already has his lectures at the college.â Â What did religion have to do with seemingly unnecessary defense lessons and a possible haunting? Â âYou could probably sit in on Dadâs classes for free if you donât care about getting credits.â
âItâs not for me.â
Wow, what was up with Arthur? Â Before Vivi could ask, the dojo door opened. Â Her dad walked out, Arthur following a moment later. Â âThatâs it for today. Â Lessons will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Â The lessons on Saturday will be longer since school will not be an issue.â
Arthur looked at her dad in surprise. Â Lance nodded. âThanks. Â Was getting worried I wouldnât anyone. Â Any chance you could teach him theology or something?â
Hiro blinked, frowned, and studied Arthur. Â Arthur looked away, grasping at his arm. Â Hiro nodded. âThat might not be a bad idea. Can you bring Arthur after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays?â
Lance nodded. âIâll make it work. Somehow.â Â He gestured turned, gesturing for Arthur to follow him. Arthur gave the Yukinos one last confused, lost look before leaving as well.
âWhat was that about?â asked Vivi.
Hiro sighed. âArthur has had a rough life. Â He needs a lot of help if he wants a chance at living normally.â Â He turned to Vivi. Â âWould you mind sitting in on the theology lessons? Â It might help him if someone his age is present.â
An opportunity to figure out whatâs going on? Â âSure.â
âAnd donât try to push Arthur for answers. Â Heâs nowhere near ready,â continued Hiro.
