Save the date, September 27 around Pasig City will be the first of the series of Bayanihan Sa Daan (Share the Road) Movement lead by Antonio “Tony” Oposa, Jr.
‘Bayanihan’ comes from two beautiful Filipino words: Bayan – community and cooperation; bayani – hero. Bayanihan meaning ‘cooperative heroism.’
It is a movement of the Filipino People, headed by Atty. Antonio Oposa Jr, one of the most well renowned Environmental Lawyer in the Philippines, with the support of the MMDA, Office of the President, DOTC, DPWH, DENR, DILG, DSWD, DOH, etc. and Civil Society groups, Clean Air Asia, Philippine Medical Association, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Partnership for Clean Air, Cycling Organizations and others.
Last Monday, September 7 the government has assigned the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) for the tragic happening daily in EDSA. What is considered as an expressway is now literally a parking lot and other means of transportation are not working for the people as well: MRT trains kept on crashing forcing a lot of commuters to alight on the next stop while buses have their own system for every company as long as they reach their quota for the day; motorcycles on the other hand are virtual flies going every lane.
While we point out the government: the President, MMDA, DOTC or DILG, a line in the news said,
We may blame the [MMDA] for this traffic but we have considered all your suggestions; however, there are 9 other decision makers, each has their own take and attack on the traffic.
Here are other suggestions that I saw on my Facebook timeline (I omitted some names):
At first I wanted to react: stop comparing to other countries. My personal take?
1. Regulate the buses, strictly impose a centralized bus system: say there will be 3 buses every 30 minutes with 30kph and will stop on designated stations only for loading and unloading and waiting will only 3-5 minutes.
2. For the love of God, speed up the bidding for MRT and load more coaches/trains! The LG flat screen TVs on each station is just useless! There should be a train in every 3-5 minutes.
3. I agree on taking out vehicles off EDSA 3-5 years older.
4. Regulate the selling of private cars! Strongly impose fines on cars WITHOUT parking lots in residences.
5. CHANGE THE MINDSET that one has to have a car as a measure of success. OBSERVE DISCIPLINE at all times while strictly dismissing traffic enforcers inconveniencing EVERYONE; DISCIPLINE should work both ways.
6. Increase the salaries of traffic enforcers like that of an entry level staff in private companies. Yes, it is time we realign where our taxes go.
The Bayanihan sa Daan (Road Sharing Project) is a change of mindset of everyone; not just the commuter or the motorists. I have attached the mission and the goals of the campaign and I was hoping if you can help us spread the news through your blogs. Given most of us are passionate with running and some of us are now venturing to cycling, I know you can very well relate to wanting a road accessible for everyone.
Let me share the story of Atty. Tony:
there was a kid who was walking to school when he was almost side swept by a car. He promised himself that one day, he will own his own car. He grew up to become a rich and successful businessman. One day, he suddenly collapsed and he was diagnosed of ‘lifestyle’ diseases and the doctor recommended him to walk every day but when he tried, he could not even find a single sidewalk and the streets are full with vehicles and he cannot even go out because of pollution.
Let us try to make a new perspective. Let us start a movement. On September 27 Sunday, in Pasig City will be the beginning of a nationwide movement for the Bayanihan sa Daan. We can even start our part in our neighborhood, or simply tag along friends run or bike and post it online to show your support. Even through sharing this to your blog can already create a big impact.
Will this work? Here it is: BEFORE WE REACT, WHY DON’T WE TRY IT. It worked in South Korea and in France. And bikes can actually be used without clogging the traffic!

Tony Oposa, Founder of Bayanihan sa Daan, Charie Villa of Tao Po Organization, Vangge Giorgetti of Tao Po Foundation, Sachiko Numano of Bayanihan sa Daan, Elen Basug, Merva Arapo and Ian Cruz of Environmental Management Bureau, DENR)

Today is the second day of Metrorail Transit's trial run of the "Express Train" scheme. In the MRT-Cubao station, they have a scheme on where should the "Express Train" passengers and regular passengers line-up. The problem? When the regular train has reached Cubao station, the train is already filled to the brim by passengers from North Ave., Quezon Ave., and GMA-Kamuning passengers. The line efficiency may be good, but the passengers are STILL at a disadvantage.

Today is the first day of the Metrorail Transit’s trial run of the “Express Lane”, and it is already causing a lot of frustration to passengers of the MRT.
I’ve taken the train from the Quezon Avenue station, and the lines now reach to Mother Ignacia Ave.
Instead of the lines usually stopping & moving every 3-5, the passengers now move only 2 times every 15 minutes.
Also, the bag inspection area is now on the ground floor instead of near the ticketing area… causing a lot more misery.
I know that stations like Cubao, Buendia, and Taft are focal points, but how about the others? Ortigas is also a business district, and Guadalupe is also Makati.
Transportation. More PAIN in Metro Manila.
I absolutely hate C-5 more than MRT-3 and its long lines.
