Happy Friday y’all! Whoop, whoop! Remember when we were kids and your folks or your teachers tried to tell you to do something and you’d say something like “you’re not the boss of me!” Well, now, here we are adults. And we are the bosses of ourselves ultimately which is a huge responsibility. We need to choose (it is a choice) how we live our lives. One that is positive or negative, one that is surrounded by the right kind of people that fit your life now versus people who you may have known once and may not fit you’re life now. A life of integrity, (my husband is the most honest and character driven man I know), and, for me, a life first and foremost serving my husband and kids in a way that they know, every day that I love them and that they are everything to me. I’m a wife, mom, entrepreneur, and business owner, and nobody ever said being a grown up and your own boss would be easy. But, I choose to be the best version of me that I can, and accept that I’m a work in progress. And every now and then I’ll give myself a nice bonus or raise. Here we are. My grandfather and I. He was a creature of habit, he would wake up everyday in between 3:30 and 4am, take his vitamins, drink his tea, (coffee when I was little), read the paper, squeeze fresh orange juice for my grandmother every morning before heading out the door. He owned his business as a successful general contractor/remodeler and spent his days working out in the field on his projects. He would come home everyday at the same time and go straight to the fridge to eat his cottage cheese at the kitchen counter before taking off his work boots and pulling off his suspenders in “his” chair. A USC Graduate still proudly rocking his football gear on Sundays watching the game and a devoted husband still patting my grandmother on the butt as she walked by even after 67 years together. Having lived with my grandparents he loved me like his daughter. Having no involved father my expectation of a good man/husband was that of his impression; loyal, loving, attentive, withstanding, tolerant, forgiving, hardworking, traditional, and always around. And here I am a creature of habit, waking up everyday in between 3:30 and 4am. A general contractor / remodeler. Chances are you’ll find me doing the same thing everyday, a creature of habit. I grab every opportunity I can to squeeze or love on my honey. I rarely eat cottage cheese, I don’t care for work boots however I have rocked suspenders once or twice with the right outfit, loyal, attentive, traditional, and forgiving. I will aspire to be an avid saver and will always make my family my priority. Thank you for being a stellar impression of a man, and for teaching me these things when I didn’t even know that I was being taught. I’m an early riser in general. No matter what day of the week it is. My mind is my alarm clock and my eyes open wide like I’m opening up the curtains to let the day in. There is no hitting snooze. No hesitation. I just get up. This morning I woke up at 4:30 and I peeked out of the back of the house onto the canyon where it was still dark. My eyes were drawn to the 4:30 am Sunday Morning Sky. July, (let me look at my calendar, brb ...) 29th, 2018, Sunday morning sky. WOW. I just stood there for a minute. I rubbed my eyes and my jaw probably dropped a little. The full moon was beneath a layer of what looked like crushed iced made for a Kona Ice in a styrofoam cup before you choose your sugary syrup. It looked magnificent. I haven’t felt the urge to write lately. I’m not one to do so “just because”. Not for any reason in particular. I just need to “simply feel like it” to get the words or feelings outside of my brain. To be genuinely motivated to speak quietly out loud on digital paper to whoever chooses to read my little take on what I’ve chosen to give. Seeing the clouds this morning, so different than any other morning, (or maybe I chose to notice) filled me up with remembering that each day is so different. Filled with surprises. Filled with some things that maybe are right in front of us but we don’t even notice. And so full of choices. Just like deciding on what flavor of sugary, sweet syrup on your Kona Ice. We can make the choice to decide on the “flavors” of our life. To take notice of the morning sky. To be genuine in our words and in who we are. Oh. And of course. Whatever you do, CRUSH it. Kona Ice sugary sweet crush it. And don’t forget to look up now and then. You never know what will inspire you. When I was a kid and even up until my early thirties, so basically like yesterday, I used to dream that I was flying. When I was sleeping I mean. If you look up flying in your dreams in dream interpretation there are a number of interpretations. One of them is ... Dreaming you are airborne may indicate you are reaching new heights or levels of achievement in your career or you may be reaching higher levels of spirituality or consciousness; may also represent attaining or reaching for your high ideals or goals in life. Who knows. But if this rug was a magic carpet and you could fly, anywhere, where would you go? Don’t rush to answer. Think about it. And would you keep it a secret? How would it change your life? Would you still be late to your appointments? Don’t forget to still use your imagination. Just because we are adults doesn’t mean we aren’t still able to dream. And maybe even have a tantrum like a kid now and then or even shed a few tears...yup I’m guilty of that once and a while. But I think I’ll stick to interpreting my own dreams, I’m after all, writing my own book. On Sunday (Father’s Day) I headed out to Whole Foods to get ingredients for my hubby’s Father’s day request ... LOBSTER MAC AND CHEESE. I pull into the parking lot and I see this guy, in his mid 30’s with a sign that reads “Please give me money, I have two kids, a wife, and I need help”. He is in a nice long sleeve collared shirt, SEVEN jeans, and new Under Armour tennies. Clean cut. What do I do next? I need to get those ingredients. It’s Father’s day, I always get off track. I park my car, and instead of walking straight to the Whole Foods entrance I walk straight over to the sign holding, Seven Jean wearing, guy. Face to face with him I’m sure he’s expecting me to pull out my wallet. Um no. What I DO pull out are my words, what I do GIVE, is my time. It goes like this; DUDE. What the F are you doing? His face. Like WHAT? Guy - Well I need money. Me - ok? Me too. And everyone else you see walking through this lot. It’s a life staple. AND? He tells me he’s an immigrant from Romania and he needs to pay his attorney fees so he can complete his status so he can buy a truck to be a truck driver like he was in Romania. STOP. This post is NOT about immigration status. Me - Are you F-ING kidding me guy? So, all these people around you are supposed to contribute to support your choice to move your family here. You don’t have a truck, but you ARE able. To work. He was so caught up in blaming his lack of success on everyone and everything else. I looked at him and said - you know what your biggest problem is? You. Stop blaming everyone else for why you can’t or you haven’t. YOU are your own obstacle. I don’t what obstacles you have. You decide on where you’re going. Your success. It’s not ANYONE else’s responsibility but yours. Then I said, pull out your cell phone. And he did. Take this number, my friend, she also came here with nothing from another country. But she chose to create her own success, a business that now provides for not only her but for other people who choose to work. Call her for a job.
