Underground Railroad
Back in the mid-1930s, my fatherâs first job found him working at the Jewel Tea Company in Chicago. Jewel was (and still is) a large regional supermarket chain. His first job involved him delivering grocery orders throughout the neighborhood, pulling his little wagon along the uneven city sidewalks.
Little did he know that he was 85 years ahead of Amazon and Walmart in the food delivery business.
I have no idea how people placed their orders then. They certainly did not have the internet or cell phones, and I doubt many even had a land-line telephone. Iâll just accept it as gospel that those orders came in somehow, and Dadâs job was to provide the same kind of convenience that modern shoppers want today.
Delivery trucks, drones, and even robots are either in use today, or being developed. The goal, just as it was 85 years ago, is to get the goods to the customers as quickly as possible.
The race to establish fast and efficient delivery services is ramping up yet again, though, with plans in the UK to have a network of underground tunnels to facilitate that goal. British start-up Magway is aiming to tunnel under London and use linear synchronous magnetic motors to create an underground railroad of sorts that will send delivery pods across town.
The system could reportedly shuttle up to 600 million parcels a year in London alone.
It all sounds good on paper until you consider the details. As it stands, the system would only be marginally faster than driving a delivery truck above-ground. So speed is not the benefit.
The cost of the proposed network is staggering, with estimates at $3.1 million per mile, plus another $7.2 million for âplanning, installation, and legal costs.â Ouch. Thatâs $10.3 million per mile. The planned network of 528 miles would thus balloon into the billions of dollars.
Another âproblemâ is that the system does not provide delivery to your door, because that would require tunneling under each and every street. Instead, access points will be built that will be centered within 10-15 minutes of walking or cycling from residential areas. In other words, you still have to travel to get your parcel. There will be no âlast mileâ delivery under this system.
Finally, underground railroads like this will only work in large urban areas. It would make no sense to burrow under hundreds of miles to service all of Texas; it wouldnât even make sense to dig a tunnel between Amarillo and Canyon.
That said, the system does promise less congestion on Londonâs already-busy thoroughfares. With home delivery of groceries becoming as normalized as getting all of our other non-food products delivered from Amazon, it offers a glimmer of hope. Delivery trucks are only bound to increase in the future if we continue down the current path. If consumers are willing to trade 10-15 minutes of inconvenience to retrieve their parcels for food and non-food alike, it could actually ease current congestion, not to mention in the future.
Infrastructure costs for transportation of the future are not going to be cheap, no matter what the method is. Our current streets and freeways are at capacity in many areas, and solutions are going to require creative thinking as well as fat wallets.
Iâm pretty sure my Dad could never have envisioned so much change from his first job. Oddly enough, though, I could see a market for someone like him, but as a third-party entrepreneur. The Magway system still only puts deliveries within 10-15 minutes of customer homes. Imagine teens and young adults pulling delivery wagons along Londonâs sidewalks, bringing parcels door to door.
Hmmm. I think my Dad in heaven above is smiling right now.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If thatâs the case, then Instagram must really be into Snapchat, because it keeps borrowing things from them.
Of course, allâs fair in love, war, and business, and Instagram, the photography social media site now owned by Facebook, really doesnât care what Snapchat thinks. These arenât wistful longing looks of love from Instagram; no, they are attempts to plunder the most important attributes of its chief rival and roll them into its own product.
Like Threads, the new Instagram app that mimics Snapchatâs messaging features to message a close circle of friends. As per the Instagram model, it is camera-centric, but can be used just as easily for basic text.
So why is Instagram, with more than 1 billion active daily users and 500 million daily users on its Stories feature, stealing from Snapchat, which has only 200 million daily users? Simple. Because it can. Just because a rival is smaller than you does not mean they donât have a few good aspects worth plundering.
So while imitation may be flattery, it is also business as usual in the land of the free. It may appear to be bullying in a sense, as if Instagram stole lowly Snapchatâs lunch money, but this is the risk for anyone in business. You may get purchased outright (which is the dream of some start-ups, of course), but your competitors may also be able to cherry pick your strengths and make them even better.
And that is exactly what Instagram has done. With Facebookâs massive backing, Instagram is able to pilfer ideas, tweak them, and make them better than anyone elseâs, and it is still cheaper than if they had to develop them in-house.
All of which may seem patently unfair, but it is what it is. Itâs all about eyeballs these days, just as it always has been in Marketing, and Instagram wants to give its users more reasons why it should stay focused on its app, and not someone elseâs. Eyeballs lead to advertising revenues, and thatâs really all that matters in the end. The bottom line speaks for itself.
Of course, this little escapade could wind up hurting Instagram in the process if it does not meet and exceed what Snapchat is already doing. Threads had better be good--very good-or else people will scoff and return to their business, which may be a split loyalty. The ball is now in Instagramâs court, if you prefer a sports metaphor.
The stock market also speaks for itself, though, with yesterdayâs closing prices at a little more than $179 for Facebook, and only $14.30 Snapchat. You donât think that eyeballs are important? Think again. The market thinks a lot of Facebookâs methods, which naturally includes its Instagram app.
As for Snapchat, they will have to return to the drawing board to try to innovate something else, knowing full well--I hope--that Instagram or anyone else could steal and improve upon it. Itâs the nature of the beast.
And if your stomach canât take that kind of uneasiness, you probably shouldnât be trying to imitate a business.
