I've heard it go around that Pixar originally wanted Fear instead of Sadness to get lost with Joy in Long Term Memory for the plot of the first Inside Out.
Let me just say, I am SO glad they changed it to Sadness, since 1) it works better thematically with Joy needing to see the value of Sadness, and 2) if they had stuck with the Joy and Fear plan, it would look just like this and I wouldn't be able to think of it any other way :
