I base a lot of Tom's veitnam history off my grandfathers own. And Tom is not proud, he doesn't like talking about Vietnam. He does not wear any military uniform with pride and he RARELY goes to a veterans meeting. He does not. Like the government and what they made him and other young men like him do over there. So Tom will never be a proud war vet. He is deeply ashamed and still has nightmares from the war.
Scars from the war: Tom was blinded after a landmine managed to blow up their vehicle on the way back to basecamp. He had to have eye surgery to fix his vision. In his older age you can no longer see the scars as they have easily faded in with his wrinkles. But when he was younger you copuld see a few different surgical scars around his eyes.
He also has a burn from his left side of his neck down his shoulder and over his shoulder blade, down his left side of his back to his hip from the same exploding truck.
He's got a deep scar on his thigh from when he fell in a battle in landed on a bayonet. That sucked.
Tom served for about five years before the car blew up and ended up sending him back home to Hawkins. Where he promptly burned his uniform. He only has one uniform and he never wears it. Janet kept it and it stays in the back of their closet. Where no light can see it.

✍ Favorite thing about writing the muse?
The Holloways always seem to come back into swing as muses when I need them too. Least for the past six years of having them. Despite the drama and such they get into. When I am often at my worst, they manage to inspire me to write stupid werewolf verses. Or think about a modern verse of Tom as the Mayor or some stupid big asshole News Anchor with now Nancy who is now his second!
Each one of them really are wonderful muses. And to be honest. These are some of the first cannon muses I've ever written. Idk if I do them justice, but. I do adore them. And so, that has to count for something. I love them for their flaws, which, is many, and I adore them for the unexpected warmth there is to them as well. In general. For being stupid side characters, they really captivated my heart. Very grateful to them and all I have learned with writing them.
