So the mice are not dead. I discovered this because my cat woke me unconscionably early this morning (5:14 AM! Really cat? You couldnāt have waited one more hour?) and I rambled out to feed her. I opened up the closet where the mice emerge from, which is also, incidentally, where the litter box is now so that the smell of her pee and poo deters them. Alanna went to do her business, but halfway there, got distracted by something and tried to chase it up the crack in the wall. Definitely the mice. (I really should post a picture of the crack. Itās a humdinger, which the maintenance guy took one look and said, āI canāt seal that.ā)
So the bad news is theyāre still alive. The good news is that the litter box/cat combo really is deterring them, because Iāve not found any mouse droppings or evidence of chewing anywhere in the kitchen or the closet and the peppermint cotton balls are still undisturbed, though I did swap them out this morning.
Now I have to wonder where theyāre getting their food. My upstairs neighbor is the one who passed away back in August, and I would assume they cleaned the food out of his apartment, though itās still let in his name, which is just bizarre. My next door neighbor moved out while I was gone over break, so that apartment is empty and thus unable to provide food. This leaves the other upstairs neighbor or the bugs which I know reside in our basement. Either way, as long as theyāre not raiding my pantry, I guess.
