Significantly easy, but surprisingly difficult: words that best describe my experience in Gulugod Baboy.

Significantly easy. Gulugod Baboy is pinned in Google Maps, which means you can travel up with your car. 😅 You are surely disposed to hike after hours of playing with foot breaks and gear changes. 😂 Because Google Maps led us to the easy way up, we made it to 2 summits in less than an hour! 👎 Call it a watered-down hike, but if you're on a tight excursion schedule, this is the way to go! 😛

Surprisingly difficult. As an adventure seeker, I really don't mind not having a guide. Kuya Tony posed the dilemma that the car is more prone to be lost than hikers not to find their way. 😆 Ironically, he guided the driver and the excursionistas wandered. 😳 There were moments when we trusted our instincts, but most of the time we struggled against gravity. Unlike other mountains I climbed, Gulugod's terrain is both natural and man-made. The dry soil makes downhill slopes challenging, but cemented roads fake it. 😑 Oo, gugulong ka talaga sa Gulugod! (Yes, you will really roll down Gulugod!) 😄

As a matter of fact, these two mountains are actually extinct volcanoes .Kilimanjaro itself is made up of 3 separate volcanoes namely, Ibo Shira and Mwenzi at 5896 metres,3962,5149 meters high respectively.The formation of the Great Rift Valley which is in a distance of 100kilometres to its west has geological relation to the violent activity of Mount Kilimanjaro.

How to get there

By air, the Kilimanjaro International (JRO) is the nearby international Airport. For those people coming from Europe, KLM/ Delta Airlines has direct flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport from Amsterdam.

You may choose to travel with prominent airlines: Kenya Airways if you are coming from Nairobi in Kenya. It also has relationships with Precision Air and you can catch any of these at a very low cost even for an all round trip ticket. Scheduled shuttle buses are another option you can take. The bus sets off at 8am and 2pm daily at very low individual prices. The journey takes you for 5 to 6 hours.

From Dar Es Salaam you can still get a comfortable ticket fare for a return trip or t take a bus for about 7 to 8 hours to Moshi in Arusha.

About Kilimanjaro

As one of the most unique land highlights of Africa, Kilimanjaro has always been ranking for ever. The mountain takes over the Kilimanjaro National Park horizon with its 3 volcanic cones. The mountain has a number of routes available and thus making it famous and liked despite the challenge there is to hike it.

It is obviously not easy to conquer this mountain as it firmly stands at almost 6000 meters above sea level. As you get ready to go up Mount Kilimanjaro, please take note of the following things that you may need. A sleeping bag with a very nice warm jacket is a must. For without these you will never forget the terrible night you had while at the slopes of the mountain. A bag of about 15 kilograms is also important; you can make use of the available porter for a very small charge to help you carry your luggage.

Deciding Which Route to Trek

For whichever of the routes that you decide on to get to the peak of the Mountain, keep in mind that it will take you a minimum of about 6 to 7 days. This is important because if you take fewer days than that, then you will not have enough time to get your body used to the accumulating chances of suffering from Mountain-sickness. Good enough, you can choose from the many routes on this mountain mainly depending on the level of challenge with the crowdness, and the landscape. Marangu and Rongai routes are some of the easiest yet Machame, shira or Limosho routes are the more challenging ones if you hope to take a more adventurous but thrilling trek.
