Auli is beautiful, but it can be a challenge. If you are planning to go this year, here is what you need to know.

The Ride

Don't take the bus. Riding a bike from Delhi to the mountains is the best way to see the view.

The Best Part: Watching the two big rivers meet at Devprayag at sunrise.

The Hard Part: The roads have many sharp turns. Start your ride at 4:00 AM to avoid the big trucks.

Tips for the Trip

(Things I learned the hard way)

Bring Cash.

There are no ATMs in Auli. Get your cash in the town of Joshimath before you go up. You will need it to buy food and tea.

Put Your Phone Away.

The internet signal is very weak on the snowy slopes. Use that time to look at the beautiful peaks instead of your screen.

Wear the Right Clothes.

Never wear jeans in the snow! If they get wet, you will be very cold. Wear warm layers and a waterproof jacket.

If you have the energy, walk past the ski area to Gorson Bugyal. It is a giant green meadow with the best view of the high mountains.
