[take pity upon my soul, this is my first time writing something like this lol, read tags for more info]
The sky was a pale, sickly hue of blue, with a couple fluffy gray clouds strewn across its vast expanse. You were currently laid atop a flat, sizable stone that protrudes from the dirt. The soil was covered in a blanket of crispy autumn leaves, which emitted that familiar scent we associate with fall. A pleased hum escapes from your lips as you lazily nod your head to the music you were currently listening to.
At your side was one of those old walkmans that were popular in the late 1980’s. Someone in town owned a vintage music store and gave you it as a gift. You couldn't exactly afford your own airpods like the other kids, or even a proper phone for that matter, so you were beyond grateful. The storeowner was a sweet fellow, sweet enough to give you one of his most beloved vintage items. He had a charming personality, and you often visited his store to just listen to vinyl records or him talk about music stuff. Your walkman was personalized with a couple stickers to add some pop to its otherwise boring design (not that you would ever tell the store owner that, of course).
You were listening to some good old fashioned blues, as it was the only cassette tape you were fortunate enough to get your hands on. You still enjoyed the music though, it was comforting in a way. You hummed tidbits of the song you were currently listening to, sometimes bold enough to sing along only to go back to humming as you didnt know all the lyrics.
Sun and Moon were back at home, likely still working on that brownie recipe they discovered in the cookbook you got them from the library. You had a library card, and often went to the library and got books based on the genres they enjoyed. They couldn't exactly go into town to get them themselves, as they looked a bit… Well, they stuck out like sore thumbs.
Moon was a massive fan of books, and loved to read all genres for fun. You weren't sure how or where he learnt to read, but he just did. He particularly adored fantasy and other fiction novels. Sun on the other hand, enjoyed reading handbooks (cookbooks, nonfiction, informative, etc), and the occasional short story.
You chuckle as you remember how Sun lit up when you gave him a new recipe book from the library earlier today, this one was full of dessert recipes (as you knew he had a massive sweet tooth). His fuzzy, peach antennae wriggled happily as he hugged the cookbook close to his chest. “Oh, goodness, thank you, Honeysuckle!” He chirped, then flitted through the pages quickly, taking care not to crease any pages despite his speed.
His white eyes widen as he finds a certain recipe that peaked his interest. “Peanut butter stuffed brownies!?” He squeaks with joy, then quickly shows you the page. “We’ve got to make this!” Sun says with absolute certainty. “It's a perfectly warm treat for such a cold, bitter day!” His wings flutter with excitement as he picks you up and nuzzles his cheek against your face.
“I promise it's going to be the best thing you've ever tasted!” He swears with an excited grin, then promptly sets you back down. “When Moony wakes up from his nap I'll have him help us!”
You shift on your side, taking a deep breath of the cool, autumn air. You snuck out of the house after helping Moon mix the ingredients for the brownies. Both were too preoccupied to notice you suddenly exit the kitchen. Sun was setting up the oven temperature for the brownies, whilst Moon was pouring the batter into the baking pan.
You snuck into the living room, promptly putting on a scarf (lovingly knitted by Moon) and a pair of scruffy vans you were too stubborn to get rid of. After a short walk through the woods, you've arrived at the spot you currently are at now. A small clearing in the dense woodland with that all too familiar smooth rock jutting out from the ground.
A small sigh escapes you as you continue to stare at the sky. A somber expression crossing your flushed face. You weren’t exactly sure why you felt the sudden surge of melancholy, but the feeling clung to you like lint. Before you knew it, large gray rolling clouds appeared from above the trees, obscuring the once blue sky.
Sun had warned you that it was going to rain sometime today, but your smooth brain forgot about that fact, or rather, dismissed it. The brisk air bit at your fingers, making them red and numb. Rather than getting up and walking back home like a normal person, you continued to lounge on the stone, listening to your walkman.
You opt to count the leaves on a tree, ignoring the unpleasant feeling of the frigid air against your body. “Forty one, forty two…” You quickly lose count, then start over. Sun and Moon must have realized you've been gone a while ago. You were definitely going to get a scolding, no doubt, but you didn't mind.
You were gonna be fine, it wasn’t gonna rain yet, so why worry? You close your eyes, losing yourself to the music playing in your ears…
…
You were brought back to reality when you felt a water droplet splat onto the bridge of your nose. Crap. You lift up from the rock, staring up at the gray clouds anxiously. Curse your dumb dismissive small brain! Sun and Moon were gonna be really mad when you came back home utterly soaked!
You had to get home quick before-
You see a large, familiar shadow appear behind you. Too late. “... What are you doing out in this wretched weather, Lily Flower?” Moon asks, his soft tone laced with concern. His hushed, tender tone had always soothed you, but right now it only made you feel more anxious.
The rain hitting your scalp ceased, and you looked up, seeing Moon hold an umbrella above your head. Moon was stood behind you, gazing down at you with concern. You've severely underestimated your lunar parents tracking skills…
You turn around, properly meeting his gaze. With his free hand, he presses it against your forehead. “Your face is flushed…” He rasped, “Why would you decide to leave home unannounced? Especially after Sunny told you about the rain?” He asks. You bite your lip, choosing not to respond.
Moon clicks his tongue, then scoops you up into his arms. You scramble to pick up your walkman, and stuff it into your jean pocket quickly. The little device was a bit wet from the rain, but was still working fine. You were now nestled snugly in the crook of Moon’s right arm, while his left held up the umbrella over his head.
Moon gazes down at you, his fangs prodding against his lower lip. “Did something happen?” He asks timidly. You let out a tired sigh, too drained to really formulate a proper response. All you can manage is a little grumble noise, and you press your face against his chest fluff. Moon seems to understand your exhaustion, and chooses not to further prod. Instead he begins to walk back to the cottage, where Sun was anxiously waiting.
“The brownies are done, and they are cooling on the kitchen stove at home. Sunny is excited to have you taste test them.” He says suddenly, a clear attempt to ease your nerves. You let out a small acknowledging hum, but nothing else.
The sound of rain pitter pattering against the grass fills in the deafening silence between you two. You already knew when you would get home you would get an earful from Sun about running off with no warning. You didn't mind though, you just hoped you wouldn't get sick from being out in the cold for so long.
After receiving an earful from Sun when you got home, and taste testing the brownies (they were delicious), you sluggishly went to bed.
