Jean-Laurent Mosnier
He was born in Paris in 1743 or 1744. He studied at the Académie de Saint-Luc, specializing on miniature portraits. In 1776 he was appointed court painter to Queen Marie Antoinette. After the revolution he fled first to London, then to Hamburg, finally, in 1801, to St. Petersburg. At this time Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, who would have been a strong competition, had been removed from the list of émigrés and was thus able to return to Paris. St. Petersburg was his, and he quickly rose to an influential position. In 1802, he becam a member of the academy, in 1806, he was appointed professor. He died on April 10, 1808.
