There were some memories of Christmas that had come back to him over the years. Memories of Christmas as a child before he lost everything. The tree was huge and always expertly decorated by Mama Diane herself. Flowers, handcrafted wooden ornaments, small white lights, and of course, the beautiful white abalone shell star with its golden fixtures on the very top of the tree shone like a beacon in his mind. There was always an abundance of presents down at its base all wrapped in designer wrappings sitting neatly atop the tree skirt which was a white faux-fur throw rug. The fireplace was always lit with the stockings hanging also stuffed to the brim with presents and small goodies. The place smelled of the pine tree, burning wood, and the amazingly enjoyable ham feast Mama Dian would cook.
Morty and summer would run through the opulent vacation cabin home nestled into the forest. It was the rare occasion he would get to see his mother, Beth, and get to catch up if only for one night. It was warm and loving and full of celebration when they all got together, one of the only times he had seen Rick stay at home for so long. The only time they stopped training and took a break. Rick would adamantly stay up to "catch" Santa with him and summer only to put all of the gifts under the tree when they were asleep. The next morning he would settle down with them and wait for Dian to wake them up, putting on the charade of being disappointed that they fell asleep and didn't catch him.
Years later Christmas would look a little different, but it was still all the same tender feeling. He would call off work to decorate the small apartment him and Erick lived in. He would fain sickness, but by the time Erick came home the tree would be up with some lights, a small train would make its rounds at the trees base, their two stockings hung on the wall above the couch, and a small dinner for the two of them in the freshly cleaned apartment. They would pile onto the couch and watch whatever was on TV while a small space heater warmed the up their small cozy home. They would go and see Uncle Alpha and Jules and his two most beloved brothers Shep and Pete where they would spoil him with gifts, even Alpha would get him a little something. He would get a handwritten letter from Diddles and even one from Alpha from the adoption center. It was a smaller gathering, it wasn't designer brands, glamour, and opulence, but it was still everything he could have asked for. It was love, it was a home, it was a family Christmas.
Tears stung his weary, distressed eyes at the thought, the memories he cherished and held so close to his heart. He sat alone in the very same apartment, the one that was once filled with love and security. It was dark, and he just stared out the window looking out at the Citadel. The very window he watched the sunrise from his first night here. There was no love, or joy that filled the air, only an aching emptiness that struck him down in the pit of his heart. There were empty bottles of Grey Goose Vodka and various other brands of hard liquor on the coffee table, unlabeled pills scattered amongst the joints, along with a few lines of un-snorted K-Lax accompanied by a tightly rolled up dollar bill next to them. There was no family, no Uncle Jules or Alpha, no Pete,... no Shep,... no Erick.
His phone sat unlocked open on Sheps contact, it was ready to call, however, it was as far as he had gotten. It now sat abandoned, across the room on the two-seater bar that separated the kitchen from the living room. Next to it were two checks made out to both Shep and Pete, one hundred thousand dollars made out to the two of them. The money he scraped together, unfortunately, came from unsavory ways of living, but if it went to them, it was worth every torturous moment. Three roses sat next to the checks, undoubtedly for the three graves, he often found himself visiting. Gradually and shakily Morty stumbled over to the bar to slide the checks into cards with handwritten letters filled with love and reassurance that everything was fine.
Zipping up his black windbreaker, roses, and cards in hand, he looked at the contact on his phone screen one last time. A single tear rolled down his freckled cheek as he picked up the phone. It shone so brightly in the dark of the apartment, like a beacon. He looked around at the state of the apartment, of his life, alcohol, hard drugs, darkness,...
More tears rolled down his cheeks as he clicked the phone closed, shoving it into his back pocket. He was shrouded into shadows once again now that the contact had been closed, wiping away the tears his breath catching in his chest as he struggled to take in a proper breath. After a minute he fell silent, holding back the ever threatening breakdown, and made his way out of the apartment.
