a door opened to dan heng's room, revealing a creature quite recognizable from ancestral memories. he holds a special cake with various decorations about the nameless. behind blade, march 7th and the trailblazer appear, waving to their best friend. it was their idea that gave the hunter the courage to face him without ancestral memories being the reason for his refusal to talk to the birthday person. it's not because of being dan feng ——— he's long since stopped associating him with that ——— but all the hunts and the trauma they caused can't be erased. in reality, he has reasons to be slightly nervous because of the affectionate memories that influence his actions. knowing that dan heng has no memories and that the objects he owns probably have different meanings, blade wants to avoid that subject.
"i hope you like it..." the calm tone was pronounced. the people behind closed the door to offer privacy. the craftsman, a man of few words who is not like yingxing, made an effort to be less awkward. "i made this cake. i hope you like it". he walked to set the food on the table and quickly turned his back when he returned to the door, without making any move to leave. not wanting to force contact, from their recent reconciliation, only two words were spoken in that moment.
truth be told, blade would be correct to be apprehensive about the day, about it’s association to not only dan heng, but to dan feng. the imbibitor lunae’s soul had been written into the stars, into the paths of the moons orbiting the arbour, and because of it, the dragon king’s birthday had always fallen on the same day of the lunar calendar. dan heng’s, dan feng’s, and yubie’s before them. but while their birthdays had been celebrated with parades and nonstop fanfare, dan heng’s had been a day of mourning, an omen. to reconcile with this fact was one hundreds of years in the making.
dan heng’s apprehension around blade was no longer one of resentment, his curiosity about the man no longer revolving around the fact that he had once been yingxing. every chance to speak with him felt like exposure therapy, peeling back layers of mystery that had once shrouded an ever encroaching nightmare. in the last few times they had interacted, the dynamic had been … odd, as if dan heng and his dwindling attempts to push blade away had made him the pursuer instead. he no longer feared this man, had not for a very long time, but there was something that felt … not quite right, about blade fearing interactions with him.
‘ was it the trailblazer who told you my favourite flavour is mung bean ? ’
his tone started harsher, and more accusatory than intended, and even dan heng was left a little startled by it, mirroring blade, trying to curb his own awkwardness.
‘ do you … not want to share in the fruits of your labour ? ’
