Maedhros had to admit he was impressed with the trouble that the Vala had gone through to see this particular punishment was successful. Naturally, giving the furious albeit weakened prisoner a knife would normally not have been very prudent but, kneeling with his legs shackled to the ground and two guards with weapons at his throat and the dark lord himself still holding the chain attached to his collar, there was little he could do with the blade even if he had tried. And if he thought it would have garnered something beyond being beaten and choked into unconsciousness and then later punished further, he would have. If he had thought there was a chance he could die, he would have. The blade was not sharp enough to be effective in taking his own life. Not under such close watch 

“What script am I to use?” This earned him a strike across the face. He spat out the blood which earned him another. Maedhros’s jaw ached as he averted his eyes to his bare calf and tried to plan out the easiest way to do this. His hands shook as he made the first mark. Not sharp enough to easily take his own life but a dull blade, it was always said, could be more dangerous than a fine one for the pressure that was needed. It certainly hurt and gritting his teeth to hide it only caused more pain to shoot through his body. 

Melkor’s laughter startled him and the blade slipped on the fourth character. Anger tore at Maedhros and in a moment of recklessness he threw the knife towards his captor..who caught it but barely. It sliced across the palm of his uninjured hand. There was silence in the chambers. Each guard seized one of his arms, looking rather alarmed at the anger they expected their master to show. Indeed, as Melkor strode towards his restrained prisoner, it was obvious that he was restraining himself from ripping the elf to pieces. The nails of his burnt hand dug into the sides of Maedhros’s already bruised face. 

“Foolish boy.” The whisper shook the cavernous walls and the guards appeared unsettled, “What did thou hope to accomplish by such a petulant attempt?” Maedhros could not look at Him , could not force himself to. 

“Thy hands should be taken for this. Crushed or broken or removed. What a fate to befall the eldest of Curufinwë...not that thou hast yet shown his need or use of them.” The touch to his face became almost gentle as the Vala straightened and turned to the guards again, undoubtedly to order them to bring Maitimo to his next hell. 

Note: unfortunately the next time Melkor just does it himself, having Maedhros drugged but still conscious and chained down naked on his stomach. It ends up carved in a few places in more than one script. I have the scene somewhere but it’s very intense and messed up

I could still ramble on it for awhile though.

Edit: that scene is actually posted but is currently set to private due to graphic content. I am planning on making it public when I feel more comfortable though
